sound when turning the strearing

Hi,I have this annoying noise when ever i turn my strearing wheel either to the left or right....it is definately from the outside.was told it could be the arms which need changing (quiet expensive) so tot better ask u guys for your feed back first.my ride is a e46 2000 model.thks guys

It could be the arm or the streering rod , most likely the arm because the the arm normally give problem after few year on e46,
I change mine for RM1400 two side inclusive the bushing, the knocking sound come on when going on bumpy road.

looks like gonna be poor abit this month..........yup the sympthoms u specify fits my case well............noise abit when go over humps

sometime the sound could be due to low hydraulic fluid if the noise sound like whining sound. You need to top the ATF. I think you have to use DOT 3 or DOT4.

If it is knocking sound sound, then check the arm bushing. If the rubber bushing is damaged, you will also feel the steering judder when you applied hard braking..

Also look for sign of oil leak near the end of the steering rod. Sometime you can change the oil seal if the shaft is not scratched or damaged.
