Whilst waiting for new tyres to be installed on my car, I noticed an old uncle strolling into the tyre shop, carrying an AMG rim. He apparently is a rim refurbisher and can repair bent rims using what the tyre man said is the "compression" method, whereby heat is used. The tyre man said the AMG rim was bent and the uncle repaired it with the aforesaid method. Does anyone know anything about repairing bent rims using such a method? Is such a repair effective? Would the strength of the rims be compromised?

lgeek, can I trouble you to enlighten us as to why you think it's superb technology. Thanks.

Firstly, how do the guy determined the roundness of the rim?

It is good practice to heat up the rim prior to knock it back to shape
as it soften the Al alloy. Please bear in mind that the heat would damaged
the paint work.

Normally, the proper method of repairing a damaged or dented rim
is to hook is up to a lathe machine. By spining the rims (with the tyre
detached first), you would be able to determine the place where it
is dented as compared to other area.

further refinement can be done to refurbish the rim when it is still
install on the lathe machine.

BTW, I have seen many rims being knock back to shape without any
heat being applied to the rims without any adverse effect.

pss..sst ... somebody told me there is a shop in shah alam that do the
rim repairing.. would most cost you about RM55 to 75 depending on
the rim diameter..

Wouldn't the heat weaken the alloy?

And can bent metal be "straightened" back especially just by knocking?

could you pls give us the direction where the shop is? Quite interesting

yup...there is a machine to perform the job..I have seen & repaired mine rims..cost RM70/pc for 17".

My town here got one.., it use heat & compression to repair the "sick" rims..., the rims is locked then turn on the machine to identify dent area..

See if I can take some pictures of the machine for you guys  ...
