I just got an unreg japs version 318i and the radio frequency display is different from our. I have added the booster and it can receive the local channel but the display still show funny frequency.Can this problem be sorted out or I need to change the whole thing.Please advise.TQ

with the booster, it'll still show you the jap freq display.

there should be a piece of paper with the booster showing the chart
[jap freq --> our freq]

it's quite a long chart!

if not, don't think there is any other way than changing the unit.

Go check out an ad in the Classifieds section - there's a used UK-spec E46 radio for sale!

There's also another used UK-spec E46 radio for sale at Heritage.

Heritage also has a used CD changer to match the UK-spec radio that I mentioned. I don't know what's the price.

Radio Frequency Booster?

anybody can share with me where to buy the booster and which shop in KL or seremban area can do this? some of the shops i asked sell the booster but not sure on how to dismantle the radio panel.

btw, mine is a e39 jap spec...the radio unit has a small screen. afraid to let unexperienced novice to do the job to avoid any clips etc from breaking.

appreciate ur help...

Oprizal, many audio shops should sell band expanders (aka booster). You can just google for a method to remove the stereo, I'm sure it isn't hard at all. Once you get the radio out, it's easy to install a band expander. I would tell you how to remove the radio if it was an E36 but I can't help because I haven't removed a E39 radio before.

keanbkhoo: There's no way to change the displayed frequency other than to get a new radio that came in a car originating from a country that uses the same radio frequency range as Malaysia. Basically the band expander shifts the frequency up by a certain amount (eg: 10 mhz) externally but the radio itself still thinks it is receiving on the Japanese frequency :) ) On the newer radios you can actually set the region, if your car is an E46 (or perhaps E36 it might be possible, too) then you can set the region, don't even need a band expander.

My E39 is a Jap spec as well with TV screen. You don't have to remove the whole radio unit actually. The booster was installed at the rear of the car, the same compartment with the 6 CD changer.

U just have to live with that or change it if you find it that irritating :)
