Does anyone know whether the E39 especially Japan Spec (with TV monitor) comes with a radio code? The reason why I ask this question is because so far, nobody can come up with a definite answer (including the guys at AB, BMW technician in Frankfurt and car salesman)

Well, if it's of any help, I can tell you that the E46 radio doesn't have codes.

funfer,

what use are radio codes? i would appreciate any info.

btw that reset tool R5/FCX-II-16 is for hire? how much
to read fault codes from m54 and m52?

Basically, the radio code is for security reasons, i.e to deter radio theft. If the radio unit has a code and we lost it for whatever reasons, then we are going to face problems especially during battery change.
About the R5 tool, mine comes with a rectangular shape 16 pin connector. My OBD access panel is accesible from underneath the dashboard on driver's side. Some UDM models come with round 20 pin connector which is accessible from the bonnet. Which one do you have?

Cheers

Why would we need Model and Serial No. for when changing out the batteries? Just wondering........
Dear sis,

From what I know, you do not need to enter the model and serial number when changing the battery. Only the radio pass or the radio code. But, strangely some imported models do not have a radio code (I think).

The radio code is on the unit itself. you have to detach the unit and if i am not mistaken it on the unit it self top left. 4 digit with a barcode. some thing like this.
