A funny thing occurred 2 days ago as i turned on the ignition of my E39. A loud explosion similar to that of a handgun being discharged emitted from the rear of my car with secondary effects of my seat cushion feeling the shockwave. to say no less, my first thoughts were i've been hit. then shortly, perhaps someone collided into my vehicle's rear. i stepped out and inspected only to see a bewildered couple on motorcycle looking at me with mouths agape. i asked them what happened to which i received the reply "we'd sure like to know what happened as well". so, they weren't the culprits. i then stepped back into my vehicle attempting to ignite my engine and this time i noticed there were no lights indicating a pre-system check which normally appears on the dashboard. odd, i thought to myself. a fuse must have shortcircuited. i then took a short walk to the rear and attempted to open the trunk and discovered that since there was no electricity supply, the power assisted trunk button could not work. good thing i read the Operating Manual and used the key. soon as i opened the trunk, i see a slight hint on smoke at the right rear portion where the battery is located. soon as i removed the cover, lo and behold smoke came spewing out with all the fury of Krakatoa. well, not exactly but you get my meaning. i called my mechanic and they sent a reliable chap over, he came soon after and brought with him a spare 70 Amp batt. so after 40 minutes or so, i started up my car and spent another hour just hanging out with him chatting about the issues faced with exploding batteries. mine was a dry cell just in case you are wondering. apparently there was another incident involving an X5 here in Penang which had its battery blow up as well. most cases as we would all have heard involves the battery just giving up and refuses to emit any more electrical energy. mine must have been one nasty character. the X5's must have been its equally nasty twin sister. so, i got it to my mechanic yesterday to refit a new dry cell. cost me a whooping RM440 just for that. and i changed a light bulb for the Tail Lights nearest to the battery. all in, RM492. they did a handheld test and affirms my alternator was working fine. the internal onboard diagnostics for my vehicle didnt light up like a Christmas Tree, which thankfully it didnt or else i would be shitting bricks for a month. so i gathered that there's no damage to my ECU and sensors and whateverelse the engineers might have included into the vehicle's M&E blueprint. so now that you've read this far, my one million dollar question is this :- Would there be any residual damage to the internal workings of my vehicle despite the systems not showing any damage OR Was there already an apparent damage in the circuitry or regulator or sensors prior to the BLOW UP (not Doll) causing the battery to have reacted in such a way ?
