Power window failure

Just got my E46 Jap spec 318i and found this club on da net. Great stuff u got here and enjoyed all the info and tips from fellow brudders (and not fergetting sisters as well  ) Here's something to share on a seemingly common and $$$ problem.

As I was reading thru this Power window failure stuff on the E46. I got scared that it will happen to mine but hey ... I got solution.

I just used liberal amounts of "PERMAGLASS Window Renew", a rubber nuprene reconditioner, applied twice and leave on for minimum 12 hours. Then move windows up and down to recondition windows into normal operation.

I've used this before on my MB190E with stuck power windows. It was a bad case , srceeching loudly and I had to use my hands to assist the windows. Two applications of the stuff and it has not stuck for over a year now. ... it just glides smoothly up and down.

Reckon that it may help the E46 as a preventive against stuck windows or broken mechanisms... after all satu botol only RM17 .. cheap cheap solution lah   Hope it will help you guys as well

hey pampam,

doubt the failures are caused by excessive load you know. nevertheless its always good to lubricate anything ... right?

Common problems with E36's and E46's, but no problem with e30's heheheheheh
Sorry,, have to disagree with you..
E46 YES but not for E36..

E36 and E30 have the same mechanism..i.e. use metal cross-brace bracket format.. hence the failure of struck window seldom happen.

As for pampam suguestion, it sound reasonable to grease
the rubber in order to reduce the friction between the
window and the rubber seal. :eek:k:

I had a weird prob with my windows recently.....

My daughter stepped on the rear left button and the window went all the way down. I pressed the up button but NOTHING happened. Tried repeatedly....still nothing...

Freaked me out, was with family and the clouds were dark...I dreading doing to a workshop on a saturday afternoon to fix this prob (really...what a waste of time)

Tried again after 2 mins and it came up smoothly as if there was never a problem. Anyone know why this happened.? The funny thing is that the window LOCK button was depressed but yet the rear windows went down when my 2 year old stepped on it (in front).

Hantu kum kum in my car!?

Cheers!

Romeo

should have heeded the advice given here.
My windows screeched, even worse after tinting. Didn't bother to lube them. Didn't know my car was screaming in pain...

So, after 11 years of service, finally my driver side power window decided to give up. The power window arm assembly broke at the joint. Harder to remove than the E46 as it is rivetted in compared to E46's which is screwed in. You need to break the old rivet before you can remove and install a new arm assembly.

Cost me RM390 for the arm and another RM30 for the plastic slider pieces (2 of them).

The rear power window lock applies only to the switches at the rear (on the doors). The rear power window switches in the centre console still operate as per normal. Its like a master panel.

But that doesnt explain why it didnt work for you immediately but works 2 mins later.

Now I am having power window poblem on the driver side. Check already the motor and the relay its is ok. Wnt to auto electrician "Panjang" at UK Perdana. he said the problem due to the pwer windoew modul located near the fuse box white colr. Checked the price with potong kereta the price is RM800. Panjang the electricia also said the same price. It seems this problem common to E46. My suggestion before you change your moor or regulator check also the power window modul. RM800 is for the second hand. ew will cost you RM1500. Waht fck!!!!

As a fellow E46 driver, i too have a fair share of trouble with the mechanics of my car. My front passenger window makes some sort of cracking sound when i wound it down, scares the hell out of me when it happen. Thought that it cracked or something but it was fine. Even my central locking button sank and i can't use it anymore till i get it fixed :vollkommenauf: As much as i love my car, it's making my ass hurt.
