Power window failure

hehehe, Jarance, it is the vacuum type of sucker that we stick on the bathroom wall ... my Brother in-law told me to do that as his E46 328i power window also gave way. If i dont put something like that to hold, the window will come down...imagine if it was raining. Anyway, that thing does not hold it very well too. Still has a 2mm gap.

Fixed the window thingy already. What a silly power window mechanism BMW engineers came up with. Hope the E90 is not the same design

Sorry to hear that bro. I guess this is a real headache for the E46's. You see, almost everytime I visit my mechanic, there is sure an E46 changing his rear door power window motor. I guess my E36's power window has longer life span maybe due to gear system and not cable.

My E46 rear left window pulak has a unique problem........you press up it goes down, press down it goes up (if it does at all). I'm just living with it for now and try not to mess with it.

owned 2 e46s. this window problem is actually due to lack of usage. (spoke to a BMW parts importer in my mechanic shop recently)

if you realize only the driver side seem to last forever right?

the wind 2/3 thingy is definitely not true. wind your window down to the max once twice a week. that'll keep things spick and span ... longer ... not forever, but much longer.

830,

I dont think the failure has anything to do with lack of usage. I can vouch for this. My own driver's side lifter just gave way last Saturday. RM460 damage and I'm fine again.

If not for the numerous postings highlighting this issue on the forum, I wouldve been ill prepared for this. Thank heavens.

Cheerio

I oso no longer think it's due to lack of usage even tho some poor fellas like E46F hardly use power window but koyak at 3 sides dy. I regularly use my driver's side cos I smoke in traffic, to pay toll or check out chicks (not the same if I can't pwwweettt...) but in the end oso koyak once in the last 4 years. I noticed tho that since my mechanic replaced it, it has performed better than new i.e. seamless, without any clicking sound. This leads me to consider that perhaps the problem has to do with the initial assembly or assemblers using recon parts to fit into new cars. It's far fetch but hey, nothing surprises me anymore after hearing of new E46s leaking water into the cabin during thunderstorms!!

:( this is without doubt the most bothersome aspect of owning an e46.i've replaced both my rears(seldom used) and now my driver's front is starting to make worrying noises whenever i use them.so as a preventive measure,i've stopped using them till i can have them looked at..its kinda pathetic having to open the door to Touch & Go and what not.pisses me off but its got to be done..i don't want a repeat of having to drive in the rain with the windows in full open position like what happened to me last year..i was fuming!!!!
the sad thing is it can strike anytime..and a small simple thing like this can sometimes dilute ur love and enthusiasm for the marque..sad :(

juan,

i'm still inclined towards to lack of usage cos the parts supplier actually brought a set to my mechanic for replacement that day. that's why i asked. He said 'nearly all' replacements are to the three under used ones.

anyway, point taken on the driver side may fail too anyway ... sigh!

USE OSO SPOIL DON USE OSO SPOIL, THEN USE LOR! VALUE FOR MONEY MAR .... hehehe

anyway 1 failure in 4 years sounds good. my rear left died at 2.

Yea changed mine 3 times already. Once was when I was in PD and the rear one went. So the drive back was very windy more so for my rear passengers...

Is it true the power window mechanisms for the front and rear
are different ?
Would it cost more to replace/repair the front compared to the rear one?
Just curious.

eh, ya lar.

i think it's an improved version of the waja power window. the price match, the failure match, ... o no no ... waja driver side or not koyak one.

no la no la

They are the same mechanism. Just that the fronts are more expensive than rears.

Thanks, mate.
I recalled my previous car(a Benz) had different arrangements;
the rear uses cable mechanism but not the front.

This power window failure thing is quite common with Benzs too...
