hello all. yesterday i drove to kepong to check on my diamond key problem. i dont remember the shop's name but it's near jusco there. i did so since the used car promised to pay for me and end up in a workshop specialized in car a/t gearbox repair. besides the key issue, i ask him quotation for doing major service and he responded as below. just to check with fellow forumers whether the price is ok.1. refurbish steering rack. need to leave car 2/3 days since they will refurbish the existing one. rm1500, labor rm200.2. psf reservoir. rm90 (lubes not included)3. gearbox oil. rm60 per 1 litre bottle. need 6 bottles.4. engine oil. need 8 litre. i plan to use syntium 5000. is it ok? any recommendation on other brands? what viscousity is ideal? mine m54b25 engine. 5. wiper hose. mine turned brittle already. how much? 6. bosch platinum iridium. havent checked the market price. but i think i buy and diy. if price is ok then i have to wait until i receive the beisan vanos seal and do it together with the service. any other things need to be replaced/checked?

I would advise you of the followings:-

1. If you are unfamilar or just a walk-in customer to this workshop, you may be in for surprises for shoddy workmanship, replacing of unneccssary parts etc etc and the list goes on. You are virutally at the workshop mercy when they have taken your engine apart.

2. Spend sometime and go through the forum and you will find lots of information on BMW specialist workshops that are frequent by our members. Join some of the Official and unofficial TTs and get to know some members and ask them for workshops recommendations.

3. Replacement of Beisan vanos seals needs special tools and they are a couple of BMW specialist workshops who has done numerous Beisan vanos seals replacement. Check the forum.

4. Wiper hose - recommend you buy the original as the non-ori ones does not last.

5. Lubricant oil - recommended viscousity 10/60

6. refurbish steering rack. Is it leaking and/or making noises when turning? recommend to replace new one as refurbishing it won't last.

From what I understand, ZF no longer manufacture new steering rack for e39. The so called "new" e39 steering rack is actually reconditoned from Germany and Bavarian Auto is selling it for about RM3,500. Local re-cond steering rack won't last as only the seals are replaced whereas re-cond from Germany, seals including all the internal gears are replaced.

thanks bro.

3. i am going through the vanos seal post page by page. got some idea. once i receive my vanos seal then only looking seriously for workshop.

4. where can i get original spare parts? any favorite shops? too many posts i sometime lost and many times distracted by other attractive topics. lol

6. just a tiny leaking. but the mb auto mechanic jacked my car up and goyang2 my tires said the tire is not firm in its position more like dislocated a bit. i just nod and said oic2, but i understand nothing. hehe. need to learn more.

ZF is an OE supplier for many of BMW parts. they supply the gearbox, suspension, steering racks etc

Bavaria Auto is different from Auto Bavaria, BA is parts supplier (spare part shop) while AB is BMW Authorised Dealer.

I like it how people think the forum is a workshop with mechanics on standby to give out quotes.. nice

forum is the best place to stop by before going to workshops. some workshops sometimes simply tell things to change/fix especially to a noob like myself. hehe.

It will be good if one can spend some free time going through various section of the forum as there are lots of valuable information on technical issues encountered and how members went round resolving it. Also plenty of spare parts pricing too.

Sharing and helping is one thing. But sharing and helping lazy ass mofos is another.

There is a search function in the forum for a reason. Every other new thread in the forum is a question that has been answered over and over again.

Your quote for auto gearbox oil seems to be too cheap, please make sure they use the correct oil or you could screw up the gearbox

noted! will do my homework to check the gb oil specs & price. now have to be more careful not to simply post questions openly in the forum. ehe.

The price of RM60 per litre for auto-trans oil is ok and I believe the brand is ZF. Bavarian Auto is selling said oil for RM 50.00 per litre.

Hi Herbert,
I am new to the E39 too ... for the lubricant oil, wouldnt the 10/60w oil be a bit thick? or this is recommended due to the age of the engine?
How bout the brand of the oil? Any brand will do? or there are certain brand we shouldnt be taking? is it a must to take the full synthetic oil or semi-synthetic is just fine?

Currently i am thinking of using the Castrol Magnetec Semi or Castrol Edge, what do you think? should i go for these or go for other brand like WRUTH? WIN? or others?

Thanks ..

JS
