it has been a while since i last post something beneficial for fellow forumers and i do hope this posting will receive good feedback and spur more similar such posting.. lets DIY guys/ gals and i assure you will never regret doing it :top:
previously, during BSRI, my engine oil change out is every 15km mileage interval.. once after BSRI, i opt for 10km mileage interval.. somehow, this time around i have just travelled 5km and wanted to proceed with engine oil changeout as my hand are itchy to post my DIY for BMWCM members :4:
Required & Material Tools
1 x 3tonne Hydraulic Jack
2 x (2”x 4”) Wooden Block/Plank
1 x Flat Head Screwdriver
1 x 17mm Socket Wrench
1 x Drain Pan
1 x Funnel
2 x 4liter Synthetic Engine Oil (requires only 5.2liters)
Lifting Open Your Front Hood- duration estimate 1minute
firstly, you need to open up you engine bay hood.. for those not used to this you will need to pull the lever to right of your accelerator pedal, driver side.. once you have pulled the lever, you will notice a thump sound coming from the front hood.. now locate a metal lever underneath the hood which is located above you kidney grill.. pull it upward to unlatch and push upward you front hood..as you can see, my engine bay is not that clean.. hope to do some cleaning some day :4:
lift this lever to pop up the hood
next, lift this lever in between the hood and kidney grill
my engine bay
Removing Engine Cover for Oil Filter Replacement- duration estimate 1minute
there is a plastic cover on top of your engine.. you will need to remove them for you to change your oil filters (refer to my previous posting on oil filter changeout).. to remove, you will need to lifting them upwards first (this unsecures two tabs it is attached to the engine) before pulling it to you..
Remove your engine cover
Removing Engine Oil Cap- duration estimate 1minute
now, remove your engine oil top-up cover by turning them anti-clockwise.. this will be where you will pour your fresh engine oil later..
Remove your Oil Cap
Lifting Your Car- duration estimate 5minutes
lifting you car using a 3tonne hydraulic jack is the easiest.. i purchase them for only RM250 at a hardware shop..worth every ringgit if you as me :4: locate you lifting/ jack point on the passenger side of the car..i use a door rubber stopper in between the jack point and the hydraulic jack..doing so to ensure you damage you car lifting points..lift the car high enough for you to slide underneath the car..once you have sufficient height, place a wooden block on underneath you passenger tyre..one (1) piece for me is enough and maybe two (2) for some readers :4:
Lift your car (passenger side)
Removing Engine Oil Drain Plug- duration estimate 4minutes
slide underneath the car and locate a rectangle plastic cover.. use a flat heat screw driver to turn the latch holding the rectangle plastic cover..once the latch is turned, remove the plastic cover..this allows you to visually see and access the drain point..get ready your ratchet and drain pan..place the drain pan directly underneath the drain plug.. now use a 17mm socket ratchet to unscrew the drain plug by turning it anti-clockwise..swiftly move you hands and the drain plug away once you are done uncrewing to let the oil drain onto the drain pan..
Remove drain plug and drain old engine oil
Lowering Your Car- duration estimate 15minutes
Remove the wooden blocks that you placed underneath your tyres and lower your car..this allows your engine oil to drain fully from its pan..now wait about 15minutes..
Lifting Your Car- duration estimate 5minutes
with your old oil fully drained, you will need to plug back the drain plug..hence, you will need to lift your car..once lifted, place wooden blocks underneath your tyres..
Putting Back the Engine Oil Drain Plug- duration estimate 4minutes
Using back the engine oil drain plug, fasten it clockwise..this is where most car owners ask: How tight? My answer: Hand tightened and not crazily tight..it is just a plug, therefore if you tightened it too hard, you will only do more harm to your engine oil pan drain tread rather than more good..now, place back the rectangle plactic cover your removed earlier and latch it back..
Lowering Your Car- duration estimate 3minutes
now, lower you car and put away your hydraulic jack and wooden block..
Pouring Fresh Engine Oil- duration estimate 4minutes
you will need 5.2liters of fresh engine oil for an N47 engine..i use a measuring jug before pouring and a funnel to ensure no dripping inside my engine bay..
Pour fresh engine oil
Finish- duration estimate 4minutes
once finish pouring fresh engine oil, you will need to place back the oil cap + engine cover + close hood..tadaaaa..its that easy..total estimate duration is less than 50minutes..:top:
OBD Rest- duration estimate 1minutes
i will upload a video on this later..:smokin:
CAUTION: NEVER TURN ON YOUR ENGINE DURING THIS CHANGEOUT
comparison of fresh and old engine oil..hmm
