FRONT BRAKE DIY for 320D (N47) 2010 Manufact
i am getting fond of doing this DIY thingy.. as i indulge more, i know better bout my UDM.. hope my write up will inspire more DIY in this forum.. so, here is my DIY on Replacing Front Brake Pads and Sensor.. Happy DIY friends :4:
obviously removing the wheel nuts using a ratchet is not right.. since i have done it in the past, i tried using ratchet again.. this time i was unlucky as my extension bar twisted and broke into two pieces.. talk about poor tool workmanship.. so, i took i had to drive all the way to Kuantan and bought a proper wheel nut tee (19mm to be precise).. using a tee 19mm socket is easier to remove the wheel nuts.. i suggest you do the same too..

once the wheels are removed, you need to remove the anti-rattling clip.. to remove them, you need two flat screw driver.. in the picture above, the right flat screw driver will be pushing to the left and the left flat screw driver will be prying outwards to your body.. taadaaa.. now you have removed the anti-rattling clip..

before removing the old pads, you will need to press the solenoid back in fully.. to do this, you will require a G Clamp size 8inch (minimum).. clamp the old pads and the clipper together.. slowly tightened the G Clamp.. by doing so, you will be pressing the brake solenoids in.. keep tightening the clam until you can go no more.. just be cautious and not go too crazy tightening the G Clamp.. now the solenoids are fully pressed inwards, remove the G Clamp..

removing the plastic cap which houses the retaining bolts..
new, locate two plastic caps.. pry them out using flat head screw driver.. then, use a 7mm size allen key to remove 2pcs of retaining bolts for the clipper.. notice these retaining bolts are fairly easy to be loosen.. so, just be sure to tightened like wise during installation.. these bolts are dirty, clean them before you put them back..

wheel, anti-rattling clip and retaining bolts removed at this moment.. now, remove the outer pad first and the inner pad.. there is a clip holding the inner pad to the solenoid.. use a flat head screw driver to pry them apart with minimum force..

use a brake cleaner to clean the calipper, solenoid, retaining bolts and anti rattling clips.. honestly i feel, any brand of brake cleaner will do the job.. no preference..

this is how visually the old brake pad looks versus the new brake pad.. both are original.. the old pads have 700km remaining according to the OBD which i think is inaccurate.. nevertheless, i wanted to do the pads replacement early..

reverse the whole process up to fixing back the wheels.. where is the brake pad wear sensor? its on the front passenger side wheel..
new inner pad in first..
new outer pad in next..
cleaned retaining bolts..

repeat the same for the left side of the brake pad, except you will need to remove the old sensor and replace it with the new sensor.. you can opt for not to replace them and do good old fashion visual inspection.. its your choice..
location of the brake wear sensor is on the inner pad (front passanger side wheel)
this clip is holding the sensor cable to the brake hose..
this holder is honding the sensor cable to the front struts..
this where the sensor cable junction/ terminal box located..
press a tab on the connector and pull them apart.. now reconnect iw with new brake wear sensor and snap it in the juction/ terminal box back..
the sensor cable needs to go through the calipper first..
now, place the sensor on the inner brake pad and you have your sensor install :4:

Note: please make sure the brake fluid reservoir does not everflow when you push the brake solenoids in..remove some if you have too..
