o2 Sensor change

Hi, anyone changed/replaced their o2 sensor before? Recently did a service and a diagnostic check indicated that the o2 sensor is faulty but the mechanic said that it does not need to be replaced??Called some part shops but they do not keep stock for e34 525i(Vanos). Anyone knows where to buy, costs etc..Thanks.
