NewBie!Help E36 Guidance...

Greetings to all,My Ride: E36 328i 1997First i must say its really the ultimate driving machine. Switched from Alfa 146Ti...After reading this forums for a while now, I find you guys really helpfull and decided to join. Its going to sound a lil strange as i already own my car coming 3years and now then im turning myself online for help[very little knowledge on my car]. Tats bcoz, All the while i had a good mechanic until reasonly he and his shop dissappeared due to some loanshark crap. Lets not get ther, it makes me sick. So now i dont have a permanent/trustworthy mechanic or workshop. I live in jln Cheras KL and it would be great if someone could recommend a good/reliable mechanic around KL as i can see most of them are from Pj area which im not familiar and quite far for me. With regular checks and service, So far the car has done a great job, no major repairs, only wear n tear! Lately i hear some kinda noise[WHINNING] from the engine. As soon as i start the engine, its pretty loud and the sound actually follows the engine rev!! Please help, if i go to a shop without any recommendation he is gonna cut my throat. Based on the sound, i see a big bill coming up..Worst of all i dont really know WHAT is the problem!!Im just afraid they will ask me to change this and that blablabla, etc. As i have VERY LITTLE KNOWLEDGE in the engine department. What is it gonna cost me to fix it??A few more questions, what model is my engine? Is it a double Vanos? All feedback is much appreciated...thxHappy driving,Sach

Since u're around Cheras, u can check out M Roaster in Pandan Indah. Sound likes something related to belting I guess...

Sachseelan,

1. Your engine is single vanos.
2. The whine, which seems to follow the engine rev, could be :
i- alternator
ii- power steering pump
iii- aircond compressor
iv- fan clutch
v-something else

i. alternator - if the whine can be heard via your sound system, likely alternator
ii. power steering pump - if the whine changes when you turn the steering full lock
iii. air cond compressor - if the whine stops immediately when you switch off the aircond
iv. fan clutch - if the whine sounds more like a roar, and goes away after you accelerate to a certain speed, esp if the weather is cool. The fan clutch kicks in when the engine needs extra cooling, i.e. car is stationary and/or weather is hot.

My advice, either :

1. get to know a knowledgeable and honest workshop - quick - in order not to be taken advantage of....

or

2. learn more about your car. this always helps.

You've made a good choice of ride there. Good luck.

Yes Lee, got it fixed at Pandan Indah[nearest to my home] M Roadster last week. It was the Aircond compressor. Thx a lot bro. Great help. But i still want to find sometime to check all my bushes in detail wt u as i also read ur thread on this issue. I think my my sport rims are causing these problems as they are replicas, very heavy. will try to make some tie soon...BTW, ur car is just an amazing work of enthusiasts...smashing work.. thx again.

When I drove my car, it doesn't engage to 4th gear but only stuck at 3rd gear only. Some of the mechanics that I asked about it says that my clutch plate has worn off and the gearbox need to be overhaul.
Does anybody here has encountered this problem before?
Need some advise on this matter. Thanks

time to overhaulin' 2K to 3K
semalam I baru tanya kedai potong arround that figure lah
but not sure you need overhaul or not
ohh btw contact/pm pakcik damontwb he know what to do!
