hi to all SI FU. I was planning to get a E36 328i for my ride. Basicly my salary is around RM1800 after minus out all the EPF & SOCSO. I staying at Puchong, working at Subang Jaya. 45km per day i have to travel from house to work. Toll i need to pay everyday about RM3.20. So if i want to get a 328i will my salary can support it? Can all the SI FU tell me how was the fuel consumption & the maintainance. Thanks to you all.

i can't say i'm a sifu in telling whether you should go ahead own a E36 328, but my experience of ownership tells me that RM1800 mthly disposable income for maintaning 328 would be somewhat a burden.

the fuel consumption alone will easily guzzle up RM500/mth of your income (estimate @ 25sen per KM) not to mention wear & tear and unforeseen breakdown...

how about your lodging rental, your phone bill, your groceries, your food?

RM1800 seemingly hard dude...

my 2 sen anyway...hope it helps

There are 2 ways in addressing your issue....

1) Do your monthly budget....include the monthly instalment, the roadtax and insurance, setting a side a fraction for petrol and maintenance...... you may ended up not buying the 328i.

2) It will be tough but what the heck....just buy it for the love of BMWs!!!! Know what? You will eventually manage it!!!!!!!

Good Luck!

Thanks for your advise brother. But monthly i have been taken out RM400 from the RM1800 salary for my petrol. Beside that i also taken out from there amount RM200 for my tolls. meanings that i still have balance RM1200 to pay the car installment n for the insurance, roadtax, saving & etc. This is just my estimate. And more over, i will make it dream come true.

Brother 'meanguy'. Beside the E36 328i, i m searching the 325i also. Tested the 328i. Damn powerful n nice to drive, now just only wish that can try the 325i. Your advise i will consider. Thanks.

road tax and insurance for 1 year will be about 2600 and that would be more than your salary. maybe a 325 instead?

brother i know the 328i roadtax is around RM1600++. But for the insurance if i mistaken, the 328i can buy the 3rd party insurance rite? It wun cost tat much rite? Please correct me if i'm wrong. Thanks. 325i also a good choice. But dunno how powerful is it.

I'm driving a 318i unit with a rm4000 salary....plus minus this and that my montlhy salary will be only rm2000 left ....and i feel very tight each and every month:stupid: ..and you were saying with rm1200 and want to maintain a 328 or 325? :listen:
Bare in mind that this 318 is the cheapest unit to maintained since it has only 4pots and the FC is lower...the ware & tare parts also cheaper than the others
Luckily my 318 is a manual trans :burnout: ...power is not an issue
Please reconsider your choice, it might burden you sooner than you think

Brother. Mind to tell me how much u pay for the monthly installment? Did ur car every month send to repair? Wat makes ur salary left RM2000??? Just curious.

Koh_424,

The answer to your question can be short, or it can be long.

The short answer only has 2 characters. N, and O.

But because you have the guts to dream beyond your means, and aspire to own a 328 clearly outside your budget like it was for me in 1996, I will prepare a longer version of the answer.

Here's a typical picture of maintenance costs. All figures are approximations.

Average cost of service RM 510
Service interval every 10k - 13k km

Fuel consumption RM0.21 to 0.25 per km

Major parts repairs/replace
gearbox RM4-8k
steering rack RM2k
any major aircond part RM1-2k
radiator RM1k
engine overhaul RM5-9k
.... etc

Tires ranges RM300, RM500, RM1k per piece, change every 20k - 40k km pending on driving style

For the first 1-2 years, the major parts will fail. The car gets more reliable after all the major ageing parts are replaced.

Will add more when it comes to my mind.

Have you looked at your average monthly spending?
Do you plan to save any money?

Need to calculate how much money you have left to spend on the car. Then you can clearly see whether the 328 is within budget.

Good to have aspirations - may they spur you on.

In progress...

Koh, with RM 1800 disposable income, its not advisable to get a BMW.

I know with the current depressed used car value, many would want to make their dreams come true, but not at the expense of other parts of your life, if you still have a life after paying for a BMW at this moment of your life.

AS Lee pointed out the maintenance costs are not cheap, like wise for normal wear and tear items like tires, suspension components, sensors and plus your road tax which on average will cost you another 300-400 a month.

Good to have a dream, in 1996 i aspired to buy an E30 for 46k that belongs to a policeman and comes with dogleg gearbox. I was earning 3k at that time, but i chose not to, because I would rather drive a Toyota Cressida and still be able to have a nice dinner occasionally with my loved one. Today I have 2 BMWs.

What I am trying to say it this, there is no hurry to get a BMW, get one when you are comfortable to own one. There are plenty of cars available, who knows maybe if God is smiling on your wallet, you might be able to own an E90 in a few years time?

Cheers!:burnout:

Thanks to all the forumers kindness reply to my post. After reading all the advise. I think i better save a little bit money for the better future. BMW is nice. But it is a little high maintainance for my situation at this moment. Thanks for you all.

Cheers!

then go for a good condition e30..it will lighter on your wallet.. no installment..

there is a few good conditions that costs about 10k average..

but it needs a cash buy...

Well, that's what we're here for. Glad we can help. Wise words from Albundy.

Don't give up on your dreams though. I was in your shoes once. Salivating after the e36 328. Could not afford it then.

Seven years later, I bought it. Saw over 20 cars before choosing this one. Paid premium for excellent condition and full Auto Bavaria history. Still there were some surprises.

Over time, fix this and fix that, and with a fussy nature on my part, sunk in a small fortune (way more than the current value of the car) before I realise it. Now, it's purring smooth. Way better than when I got it. But I'm still not finished yet.... Don't know what the total bill will be. And don't want to know too.

Life is short. Enjoy. But within one's means.
