I used to wash my E36 engine for many years with no problems.
But with my E39, I suspect some of the problems I am having with the electronics is due to washing the engine with water spray.
My advise to clean the engine is to wipe down with a soapy towel or a spray-on degreaser for tough spots. I would advise against splashing or spraying water. If you do, better have a compressed air handy. Dry it thoroughly and fast.
Better to wipe it down with kitchen/paper towels. As the car gets older, the insulation materials around your wires and cables may get brittle and start to crack, seals around sensors and other electronic parts are less effective. Water could get into those cracks and may create short circuits. If you are lucky, it just blows the fuse. If not, ......
the bro's are right....use soap and water..maybe spot clean with degreaser..actually i've turned to using this environmentally friendly degreaser from "finish line" the cyclists here would recognise the brand straight away!!!..hahhah..i use it for my bikes, especially to clean the chains etc... works like a charm...
DO NOT steam clean...if u value ur electronics pls... u could fry your DME/computer!!!..
