Has anyone tried modifying the I-drive system to enable us to watch DVD movies on the I-drive screen?

you need a multimedia interface that will tap into the video input of the i-drive screen. A toggle button will be used to switch the AV input signals. With the interface, you can connect to an outboard DVD player, iPod, GPS amongst others..

quite a number of shops do this... search in the ICE threads or the E60 threads on this. Bro Thule is the main taiko on this area. I'm still a newbie.
So far, no issues (touchwood) as I only installed this a few weeks ago. Cost about RM2K but I added on a reverse camera and an ipod connector while doing this and also fix my radio (Jap spec) to accept Msian signals.

I have similar functions (3 AV input, 1 reverse cam input) and uses the button to toggle. However, I don't have the CAN bus. This would make it look slick!!

am referring to the multimedia interface only.
the Garmin GPS outboard tranceiver costs another RM3K.
Changing your CCC (around RM8K-9K) will render your TV useless and GPS useless.
Bro Thule did the multimedia interface route too if I am not mistaken. But with the DVD, reverse camera and others it will go up to about RM5K-8K also

The programming is a must when your CCC's version is v35 (or was it v33?) or less. Your iDrive screen should be brownish instead of silverish. Those E60 year 03-05 normally falls into that category. Therefore there will be no "Aux In" - Now your interface need the Aux In in order to have direct sound thru speakers. Those without Aux in can still add interface but the sound will be channeled thru radio frequency instead - possible interference & distortion.
Most BMW specialist can do the software update but no guarantee they won't fry ur CCC (japan spec). I took the risk & ended up happy man. Max price is slightly more than 1k if you do that thru AB or Ingress.
Once u add the interface & DVD player.. There will be an extra button that they will install near your steering area in which you have to push to change the screen to watch DVD or GPS.
I should have taken a picture earlier.. Anyway will try to post the pic next week.

Bro thule, ur garmin can view malsingmap as normal portable garmin device right? btw how much you got for garmin gps module?

Price was RM2.5k about 2 years ago. Most probably they have come out with new models already.. U know technology la.. Constant update :top: I have told u where I did my interface & Garmin right? (thru PM)

I changed my entire CCC (from Jap spec) and added in a DVD player. If you don't want to change your CCC (assuming you are Jap spec), you first have to check if your CCC has the AUX module. If not, have to upgrade first. But firstly, check if you already have SatNav (means 8" screen). If you're on the 6" screen....then very costly lo....
