Hi. I did a service yesterday and a friend told me to use this oil. He then later told me he may have told me the wrong thing to do. Wondering if this oil is safe to use? I am using E39 Double Vanos 523i. He told me the viscosity may have been wrong, and to use the silver Mobil 1 instead to our climate. As I have now spent a lot of $, need advise if safe and OK to run and to see all you guys experience. I cant afford to drain brand new oil and replace it now. I hope it doesn't have to come to this??Appreciate any help

I am using Castro Edge 5w-40 since i own my car 6 years ago.

10W-40 is much more suitable? Care to explain, bro?

Nothing specific, just what people are recommending. Slightly thinner oil are easily burned off.

Mobil 1 gold 0W-40 is a good oil .. in fact it's BMW LL-01 certified so you're good to go :top:

I agree with bro Beemer..used the same 0W-40 gold bottle before on my car..very expensive..but engine feels more responsive..the only downside is after some time, the oil seems to evaporate due to our hot weather..hence the need to top up from time to time..

my opinion, should be fine..just continue using it and utilise the balance oil to top up when required :)

thats what i meant..

Just something to share (and correct me if I'm wrong), but there is an acceptable range for an oil to be labelled __W-40, i.e the 40 is not absolute and oils labelled as such could be thinner than 40, or thicker than 40, or somewhere in between (within a range, of course). The information about this is published but I think they require some digging.

When I was using Mobil 1 0W-40, it is supposed to feel more like a _W-30 oil at operating temperature, and IIRC, the viscosity is nearer to the lower range of the acceptable range of a 40 weight oil. Also, the 'W' in the rating stands for winter. So in our climate, that rating could be ignored. What you're interested in is the second number, 40 in this case.

Yup you're spot on the mobil 1. There's a lighter weight 40 range of oils like Mobil 1 0W-40 and a heavier weight of 30 oils such as Castrol Syntec 0W-30.

For the winter rating I would say (imo) it's important since because that is the flow of the oil characteristic during cold weather. Since most engine wear occurs during cold start-up it's important that engine oil have the ability to flow during cold startup and when the engine about to warm up. So a 0W engine is thinner than 5W or 10W during cold and provides more instantaneous oil flow to critical engine parts. Again in my opinion 5W or 0W would be the best for us regardless of the weather.

I'm no expert just sharing from what i understand about engine oils :4:

I'm inclined towards that preference too :top:

But I believe 'W' is rated for sub-zero temperatures - don't quote me, not entirely sure.
Personal experience: on the e36 that I was using Mobil 1 0W-40, the previous owner was using conventional oil with a weight of 15W-40 for 5 years. The engine is virtually sludge and varnish free when I replaced the headgasket and valvecover gasket, it also returned healthy and even compression numbers throughout the six cylinders. This was at a place where the temperature can go down to -20 degree C.

So, personally, I'll feel less inclined towards a 15W and above oil, and will go for something between 0W to 10W (based on manufacturer recommendation of course). But more importantly to me is getting a reputable brand of oil with consistent quality, and changing the oil/filter at regular intervals.

I'm using castrol magnatec 10w/40 on my old junk 523 e39..never had the topping up issue so far..lucky me i guess
