Hi sifu-sifu,Can advise me what's the maximum tint thickness our UDM can take? I'm thinking of putting on an 8mm security tint on my E39. I already have an existing layer of solar tint (possibly 2mm), which I don't plan to remove. Will it cause the power window to struggle? Anybody tried 8mm tint? Thanks.

8mm is almost a centimetre. are you certain? besides, vision can be rather blurred if you go maximum thickness.

clarity is important bro, 2mm is suffix, you need to be able to escape should your car crashed into a monsoon drain.

i think he meant 8mil tinting

Measurement used to determine thickness of a coating. 1 mil = .001 inch (1/1000)..

I have tried 8mil before and 9mil would be an overkill. No doubt the thicker the film the better but the tinted windows are only unbreakable in terms of an outright smashing by someone i.e. using a baton or a brick

Burglars using special tools can break the window edges and then be able to remove the whole glass without shattering it (because of the film). So in my opinion it is pointless to install films which are too thick as it only makes it easier for the thief to take off the whole window from the car door panel.

Besides that, like what our fellow members said in the above, in the event of an emergency it would be difficult to get out.

I think 6mil would be sufficient.

My mistake. I meant 8 mil as bro beemerback pointed out.

Actually the idea is to prevent smash and grab i.e. direct hit with a baton or helmet etc. If nobody's in the car, don't really care.

Did the power windows seem to labour going up or down when you had the 8 mil tint? If yes, I'll look for 6 mil tint as you suggested.

Touch wood haven't had to decide on this before, but in the event of emergency and needing to get out, will one be able to break the side window with any security tint on it? Lets say 5 or 6 mil tint? My thought is to break the windscreen. After all, windscreen got insurance mah :D

Thanks all for feedback.

Not sure how thick my previous ride was. But i double tinted my golf gti. First layer was llumar security tint which is good for protection but lousy in heat rejection. I had another layer tinted with AirCool after that and the car was super cooling.

If cooling is your main concern, go for the darker tint for front windscreen or invest more on a good quality tint that has the highest rejection.

Had the car for 4 years, no issue with power windows. But then again it was a vw then.

to prevent smash-and-grab thieves from running off with your handbag or briefcase, you just need your window to withstand one or two knocks. for safety reasons you actually want your windows to break when repeatedly hammered.

If the objective is to hinder smash and grab, take the 8mil. So far no problem with my power windows.

The 6mil is able to withstand a few blows and the 8mil will be even better but darker in shade.

In an emergency, remove the seat headrest. Use the steel rod (from the headrest) to break the windows, starting from the edges (side)

Raytech Safety film is develop in Commonwealth Laminating and Coating, Inc, tested by America National Standard Institute. As window film specialist, Raytech just emphasis in the thickness of 4-6mil for automobile window used. Normally, 6mil and above will cause disruption of power window in1-2 years time in most of car.

Safety film is always described in term of “mils”, which is a measurement of thickness as one thousandth of an inch (1/1000 inch). One mil equals 25.4 microns (micrometers). The varying thickness is achieved by mechanically laminating multiple layers of film together with aggressive adhesive coatings. The Safety film is attached to the glass with extremely aggressive pressure sensitive adhesive. When stress causes the glass to break, the film has ability to stretch and absorb some or all of the energy generated by the stress. The result is that the broken glass may remain intact within the framing system preventing shards of glass becoming lethal projectiles.

However, never make mistake that safety film is unbreakable. Every safety film has its break strength limited. Raytech 4mil Safety film can support up to 134lb break strength. As professional opinion, we never tell the customer how good is our safety film, even the original Raytech USA safety film just can delay breaking time for 20-30 seconds. Further more, although the safety tinted window has broken, the thief need to make a hole on the tinted window is not easy also. Thus, we got just enough time to try escape and drive the car away. An expect smash-and-grab-thief can grab your things in 2-3 seconds. That why meanwhile they will not try target on the car that tinted with safety film windows. Watch the videos below : [/color]
