When cold starting the car, it will normally give quite a grunt... after warming up, it would sound sweet... is this normal?

SB, I'm not sure if your previous rides were jap. But, typically continental cars are like that in the morning. I heard that valvetronic makes extra noise cos it has new components that require warming up too. But, while in the car, you should be quite insulated from niggly noises esp in the E46.

Hi guys, my car does the same thing too in the cold morning start. Was given an answer from my mech that it could be low pressure from the valve or something. But after a few min and driving for a while, it goes off.

Aiyoo that is the sound of UDM waking up :D . I like to hear that sound early in the morning. Something to motivate you to work harder.

actually i never really notice the sound until recently when i started to crank up the car while i stand outside the car. last time i only do it after i hv sit down and shut the door tight. lucky... it is nothing serious.... anyway it is up for service in another 800km... my first service i went to AB but i was told that the second service from AB will cost me a bomb... can please recommend somewhere "good and affordable"? stuttgart perhaps?

If the car's still under warranty, better send to autobavaria lah. Helps if something breaks down prematurely and you need to get it fixed under warranty etc...

i have the same problem starting my E46 318i valvy too at early in the morning e.g. like 7am. It cranks up and has a "loud grunt" or "loud roar" at the end of cranking up just before the engine comes alive. Was thinking something was wrong till i asked a mechanic. Last saturday i did an oil change and also poured in the X1-R additive. Dont seem to have that starting grunt now. Will keep you guys posted.

I dont like that "loud grunt" and feel that a premium brand like BMW should not have that.
