In short, xDrive is different than iDrive or uDrive.. :D

xDrive means its a BMW designed 4 wheel drive system that intelligently shift the power to the necessary wheel so the car is not out of control in any thinkable and unthinkable situations. Think of it as traction control independently on each of the 4 wheels and they work together to keep the car on the road and the intended path..

Bro, I think part of your statement which I have underlined is a little misleading.

X drive only can shift or vary transmission force between the front wheel and rear wheels, starting from a split of 0-100%. As for traction control which uses individual braking, that system is DSC. As of now, BMW has not come out with a system that allows variable transmission force to any of the four wheels independently.

However, in the new X6 the transmission force is variable for the rear left and right wheel. Its called Dynamic Performance Control. :)

Here is part of the write up,

Featured for the first time as standard in the BMW X6, Dynamic Performance Control likewise ensures variable distribution of drive forces between the two rear wheels. Dynamic Performance Control incorporates an advanced computer control and an innovative rear differential incorporating two planetary gearsets and two clutch packs that enables the system to multiply torque on an individual rear wheel. The result is that Dynamic Performance Control can help steer the vehicle by directing torque to either of the rear wheels. Unique the world over, this cutting-edge technology is effective whether the driver is accelerating or decelerating and significantly enhances steering precision and, as a result, the agility of the vehicle at any speed. In fast corners with abrupt steering maneuvers or with the driver suddenly releasing the gas pedal, Dynamic Performance Control serves to improve the stability of the entire vehicle, thus allowing the driver to safely enter and enjoy new dimensions of driving dynamics. Finally, on slippery or uneven surfaces, Dynamic Performance Control provides the further advantage of even safer and more stable traction.

Cheers :)

Wah-lio-eh! "BMW has not come out with a system that allows variable transmission force to any of the four wheels independently." ???

Skyline already have that in their R33 more than 10 years ago lor. How come BMW so slow wan?! This is the commonly know as the 4 wheel torque transfer transmission ma.. I thought BMW has perfected the technology even further.. ?!

This is called ATTESA-ETS Pro (1995~ Nissan Skyline R33).. 13 years old lor.. :D

ATTESA-E-TS Pro differs from the standard ATTESA-E-TS (used in R32 '89-'94) in a few ways. Where ATTESA-E-TS controls the front to rear torque-split, the Pro is also capable of left-and-right torque split to the rear wheels. This is done via an active rear limited-slip differential. Additionally, the ATTESA-E-TS Pro was marketed as controlling the four-wheel independent ABS braking system. This is not part of the AWD system, but the ECU makes use of the same sensors to determine wheel slip and traction.

Darn.... discussing all this makes my hair drops too.. :(

Yes, you were wrong. BY any means of definition, the GT-R is one helluva of a car.

And nothing wrong with Nissan coming out with the Attesa-Pro before BMW. Audi also came out with the Quattro before Nissan.

Cheers

How come when I quote you posting, I don't get what I see le.. ????

Anyway, GT-R for me.. ? Too sporty la... and 2 doors is not my cup of tea, I prefer 4 doors sport... :D

hi xxx bro

i drove the x5 to frasers hill be4. maybe my friend is already member of this forum. his x5 feel stable on the cornering. but me and another passenger feel very naseating inside. hard feeling not comfy. his is 2004 by auto bavaria.

If you bring up Nissan Attesa, and Audi Quatro, I must bring up Honda AWD-SH.
Why is Honda SH-AWD so great ?
Quote:
"What happens when a wheel, or wheels, start to spin? It's important to realize today's standard AWD systems — regardless of how their differentials work and regardless of their default torque split — are designed only to equalize the speed of both axles and the wheels on those axles."

AWD-SH is different.
SH-AWD employs a collection of electromagnetic clutches and planetary gears, to actively increase the rotational speed of one axle, or a single wheel. SH-AWD system will “overspeed” the rear axle, then channel a disproportionate amount of that torque to the outside rear wheel, generating an inward yaw that pushes the car more resolutely into the corner. Which also mean the rear differential is also equipped with a built-in acceleration device, world's first .

Cheers
