Immobilizer

1 of my friend accidentally "wash" his key in a washing machine..... Now the remote key cannot lock or unlock the door. manually still can. The good part is she still can use the key to start the car....:stupid: Why like this??Anyway, anybody knows since when BMW start to use immobilizer?? Mine is E46 year 2003 got this device or not?? My friend is using E46 year 2001.

Inside the remote key there is the transponder, PCB and battery.Once PCB is soak in water usually it will not work and for any other electronics else well.The transponder is a chip and is not battery operated.

O....IC.. Can this transponder be repair or the key need to be re-program??

I found that quite alot of seller selling BMW remote key. Some already cut and some are un-cut. Can I just buy the key ( the seller provide instruction how to program the key ), for my spare??

Which type of key for yr friend car? if diamond shape i dun think u can do that because the transponder in sticked on remote chip.

It doesn't looks like diamond shape, is more like oval shape. So, can it be reprogram?? I don't know year of production, but abit different with my car. Mine is 2002 new facelift, have same type of key.... Since when 3 series start using diamond shape??

Since your friend can start the car, there is nothing wrong with the transponder chip.Open up the key casing and use a hair dryer to blow dry the PCB.Also change the battery.If this does not work, the PCB is already kaput.
A new key from AB will cost u around RM 800.00.

The FCC ID is indicated on yr key and not transponder

remove the small cover on the back and remove the two small screws u should see the FCC ID there, start with LX.....

Most of the key with same FCC for E46. that ID is to matching yr remote control unit. If yr key is same with mine then can use to remote my car but can't start. of cause need some reprogram before u do that.

new key with new transponder need professional to program. FYI, quite costly just for the key
my opinion is just upgrade yr key buy a new diamond shape key with remote chip and use yr old transponder will do.
I have extra remote chip for old and diamond type key, let me if u want it.

new diamond key - about rm200 (blade uncut)
used key - about rm150 (just need the electronic part)
local locksmith - rm100
