Ignition Coil

From my experience and those of my friends, the coils are somewhat more dependent of time. my 2004 failed recently, my friend's same year also failed earlier this year (1 after another). my mileage is less than 80K and his is less than 60K.

Update: one of the coils failed few days back. So guess changing them all didn't help much. Only positive thing is Ah Meng gave me his warranty (he said his supplier doesn't warranty coils) and changed it FOC for me

Hi guys,

Just want to share..few days back my car(e46 n42) gave me the same symptoms, vibrating badly, power loss and sounds like only 3 pistons running...

So i checked out this thread and tried fixing it myself..THE RESULT:

Sure enough it was the ignition coil.
With just a simple tool ie: socket wrench i manage to open the engine covers led to the faulty ignition coil.
So went to parts shop(Munich auto parts Segambut) Bought the Bosh ignition coil(ori) for only RM85.
Brought it back, fix it in and bang! the engine runs smooth as feather...
until today..

I felt so glad that i manage to fix the problem and save me from bursting my wallet..

Thank you guys..

Iandaddy, mine went off also 1yr ago when my mileage is about 40k km+ and the car is 5yrs+, guess what, the car is still using bremi coils! According to the wiki, '02 onwards they should change all to Bosch, coz Bremi is giving a lot of problem. It was a shock to me to find out this...

Luckily still under preown warranty, they changed all 6pcs to bosch FOC...

Bro, how did you know which one was the faulty one?

there's 4 iginiton coils..

1.i start the engine(you will nontice that the engine is vibrating heavily and the sounds of 3 pstons running)
2.unplug the ignition coil socket starting from one end-say,front to back.
2.1.unplug the 1st coil and hear/check if theres any significant changes of vibrations from the engine.
-->if there's a sgnificant changes ie:engine vibrate's more heavily and the RPM reduced, means this coil ok so plug back this coil.
2.2.continue the same procedure(2.2.1) until you unplug the coil socket where there will be no effect on the engine, means this is the faulty ignition coil.
3.After the faulty coil is located, try to replace with the working coil and practice procedure 2.2.1.

example: 4 pistons:

piston1 coil1
piston2 coil2
piston3 coil3
piston4 coil4

piston1 coil4
piston2 coil2
piston3 coil3
piston4 coil1

lets say coil 4 at piston4 faulty, when u connect/disconnect coil socket it doesn't give any effect.
now replace coil1 to piston4 then connect/disconnect it shuld give effect on the engine.

when coil4 is at piston1 it does not give any effect/response when connect/disconnect the coil socket.

therefore the coil4 is faulty and should be replaced.

u are right bro..i bought new e46 n42 back in 2002 from auto bavaria..the car came wit bremi coils..i got few times miss firing problem..they change 2 times, new sets of coils for me since the car was under warranty at that time..but problem did not solve..but the 3rd time when they replace for me..they give me bosch coil..since then until today i nvr have that problem again..so in e46 318 n42 case, u should stick to bosch coil..bremi was a failure for the n42 engine..

I see....basically trial and error. I have 6 coils so maybe take slightly longer time to trial and error all those.

I am not sure what year they switched to Bosch but mine was using Bosch when I got my car last year (not sure if they came with the car new). For a while I had 2 used Bremi coils along with 4 Bosch because 2 of them are acting up giving similar symptoms mentioned, eventually when 2 other failed I put a new set of 6 Bosch coils.

My E46 N42 year 2002 was changed to Bosch in 2005, so far all still working fine. If I'm not mistaken the recall was made between 2004-2005
