hi guys,been hearing some "humming" sound from the rear of my e36 318i 1999 recently. it comes on when the vehicle is moving and stops when it's stationary. any idea what's the likely problem (bearing, drive shaft etc) and how much will be the damage?

I guess all the hijackings have been a little misleading... basically if there's humming sound when on the move:
1. check the percentage of tyre thread left (certain tyres are noisy after certain % of wear)
2. Wheel bearings
3. rear diff bearings
however, it could also be whining sound from within the rear diff. This happens when the pinion gear is slightly worn causing the whining....

but i have just changed all my tyres, suspension, steering side rod etc the last two weeks. as such, done all the necessary alignment and camber adjustments alreadi. so my guest is also the wheel bearing. anyway, will have it checked out tomolo. will update u guys then.
btw, got myself a new set of floor carpet from AB glenmarie...very good price (RM123 for all 5 pcs) for that sort of material and most importantly BMW logo. thanks for the feedback. otherwise won't know where to get it.

audible sound coming from the rear when speeding..
loudly audible when reach 90km/h.... getting louder as go faster...
it is not the rear wheel bearing... checked it already..
maybe the rear diff bearing...
how often will this happen? life span?
apart from the sound, does it affect speed or gearbox or anything?
how much to spend?
if its expensive, might need to wait a while before able to change hehhehe...

it can be the bearing or it can be the worn pinion gear in the diff...
if it's the pinion gear, it'll whine...
check out the sound too when:
1. accelerate
2. let go gas pedal (decelerate in gear)
3. let go gas pedal n put gear in neutral.
do they give different sounds??? if yes, then it's go to do with the driveline. if not, then it's something else.

hi guys,
sent the car for checking with my mechanic. it's the wheel bearing...both side. now ok already. the damage is about RM850 (plus workmanship) as also replaced the bush. pretty sticky prices.
will forward the detail cost later. thanks for the info.
