How to clean e34 headlights?

My bulbs went off after dismantle the headlights for cleaning.

Later, I went to an accessories car shop to get those bulbs.
Unfortunatenaly, the headlights cannot lights on because according to the mechanic, wiring problem.

The display on the odometer shows DIP BEAM.
Anybody knows what thus this means?

Any recommended shop to go to check the wiring?
At the moment have to drive at night with the high beam on......

Could it be the polarity put in wrongly ?? Jeff, do you have pic of amizana's light before disassembly ?

Incadescent bulb are not affected by polarity... Suspect that you have an earth or necative problem...
To check...

1. Remove the lamp from its holder and remove the bulb.
2. Check the resistance of the bulb with an ohm meter. if there is some reading the bulb is OK. Replace the bulb if open circuit.
3. Turn on the ignition to ON wothout cranking. Turn on the headlamp.
4. Use a voltmeter to measure the voltage from the terminal (where the bulb was remove) to any part of the car body. The voltage should be 12 VDC.
5, If there is no voltage , check the fuse.. You might a fuse blown.

6. If there voltage , off the ignition and put back the bulb. Make sure that the earth wire is also connected.

7. After reassemble, check the light again.. good luck./

Yes, I am suspecting your light bulb problem might be related to the alarm triggering when pussy put it back in. Did your new bulb blow also when you put it in or just doesn't turn on ?

It's quite hard to diagnos. I think, while opening the headlamps, we might hv short-circuit the alarm wires. There is an alarm switch right at the end of the bonnet, ie on top of ur left hand headlights.

What type of bulbs did u buy ?

amizana, usually, cleaning the haedlamps might blow the bulbs.. i m suprised that the original bulbs was 100watts.. usually a blown fuse nothing else..

Went to see Ah Wai yesterday evening after office hour.

The problem was short circuit when opening the projector`s cap.
The wires in the cap brittled due to sudah tua. According to him,
when unscrew the cap to open, the life and earthwire may touch
each other and short circuited the wire and blown the bulbs.
The caps replaced and 2 fuses changed.

Total damage:

1. 2 Bulbs RM 28 (55w)
2. Changed 2 caps RM65 x 2 = RM 130 (Plus labour and 2 fuse)

Total RM 158

But then, my low beam now is very bright and the torch of the
headlight is very high. Macam switch on the high beam pulak.....
Kena go to Ah Wai again to adjust the lights. Duit lagi.......

So..., to those e34 old cars, make sure your wires are
new before you try to open the lights projectors to do your cleaning.

Ah Wai might be rite, but I think u dun need to change the cap laa ..
Need to insulate lebih sikit aje .. that one is DIY laaa kan ...

So adjustment, boleh buat sendiri .. ikut citarasa sendiri. Take it account ur rear loading ie kalau bawak family etc.

Maybe u suruh Ah Wai buat, pas tu balik rumah .. adjust sesedap rasa ...

Aiyakk! Started the thread but cannot make it. Realised that the meeting clashed with the Pool session.

Went to Ah Wai again yesterday.
Adjusted the beam level of the headlights.
Senang saje.....there is a small screw just
beside the headlights at the grille. Turn it
with a screw driver to adjust low or high.

Kena "racun" from Ah Wai.
Changed the bulbs/lights in the speedometer (3 bulbs)
and the aircon panel (1 bulb).
Changed bcoz the lights were dim.

Labour + 4 bulbs = RM 55 terbang...... :angry:
