How do you know which tires are quieter or noisier?

I never paid attention to my tires all my life until recently. For years when the tires for my E34 were due for change I would ask the tire shop person if there were any traded in tires taken down from a new car. I did not care what tires those were, be it all season, sports purpose or even winter tires, let alone looking at the grooves. If those were not available, I would ask for the cheapest available ones. When my Dunlop SP9000 on my stock 16” E39 ran out last year, I changed the rims to that of 18” with SP9000 (again!!!!) for the rears. Since the tire shop man said that these are among the better performing tires apart from being a little bit noisy, I thought that was worth it. When the SP9000 ran out last month, the only ready stock in the shop was Toyo T1R. The grooves look very similar to that of SP9000 and I was told these are quieter and perform just as good (I thought that was mere sale talk because they did not have anything else). Being very ignorance myself, I was comfortable since two specifications did match – The grooves pattern and the “Made in Japan” To my surprise, the car has become so silent that even my wife could notice and I bet my mom would notice too. Now I can even hear the minute details happening in the engine, which in the past I was mostly hearing the tires rubbing against the road. Now I am convinced that Tires do make a difference and I have vowed to quit doing two things: First, to order another set of SP9000 and second, buy those traded in tires. I am getting greedy and a little bit more adventurous. I want to try the ultimate tires, the quietest with the best handling. So I go back to the tire shop man again and asked him for that, when I asked for Pirelli he would reply “Yes, very quiet and good performance”, than I asked for Michelin he would say the same thing. The same thing repeated when I asked him for Yokohama, Falken, Toyo, Bridgestone etc, he would showed me the top range in the catalogue and told me that standard statement. Can the experts here enlighten me?

i know michelin pilot preceda is quiet coz i am using it, before that was using bridgestone
