Fellow UDMersI am having problem with my horn (E46 318i), it doesn't work. Upon checking the mechanic told me that the horn is ok but there is a loop of wire at the steering wheel connected to the horn that is the cause. According to him it might not be cheap. Haven't replace it yet but need to check if anyone else had similar issues before. If yes, how much did you guys pay ?

Hmmm...interesting...have never heard of this problem before personally...senior sifu's?...whats ur take on this

BT!

:yahoo:

I'm facing the same issue too....
Several ways to deal with this, depending on your budget and preference.

1. Get a good machenic to dismantle the steering wheel and replace the 'slip ring'.
Many machenic (though not all) knows how to do this. So no need to go to BMW specialist for this.
Besides, its non-critical component, so you can opt for re-cond or used-parts to lower the cost.

2. Get the machenic to add a horn button somewhere close to the steering/dashboard lower area.
Quick & dirty solution if you're driving old car and don't mind about the additional 'horn button'.

3. Replace the steering wheel all together.
Ideal when your current steering is already old, scratch, leather cracking...
Take this as an opportunity to replace with new one, how' about a cool M3/M3 steering :)

Cheers.

not sure of e46 but i think it should be the same as the 36's ....

just need to remove the center steering console and you may see a copper contact terminal there ..just resolder it ... and re-assy the console back ...that's all i did when i have the same problem on my e36 ....

the copper contact terminal serves as a bridge from the steering base to the horn base ....
