BMW 5-Series E39
The E39 automobile platform was the basis for the 1996 through 2004 BMW 5 Series. It was the successor of the BMW E34 in 1996 (UK) but was replaced by the BMW E60 in 2004. The basic model was the 520i, which develops 150 hp (112 kW). The BMW E39 M5 was introduced in 1998, with a 4.9 L V8 engine.
The E39 was sold in the UK starting in 1995, followed by the rest of Europe and finally on other continents. Various engine sizes and types have been available. Of the full range available, the USA saw the 528i, 540i and M5. The European BMW range saw the 520, 523, 528, 530, 535, 540, 525tds, 520d, 525d, 530d and M5. All but the M5 (sedan only) are available as either a touring (estate / wagon) or sedan. The 520, 523 and 528 were powered by 150, 170 and 190 hp versions of the BMW M52 engine, which is a gasoline inline-6 design. The 540i was powered by the 282 horsepower (210 kW) 4.4L V8 seen in the E38 (7-Series) and the X5.
For the 2001 model year, BMW updated the E39 with newer, clear-lens headlights which first displayed the now-popular "angel eyes". (Note: this technology is called "celis" by the OEM - Hella.) Also, the rear lights were converted to being LED-based. Other options changed: for example, the 528i was replaced by the 530i which had a new 225 horsepower (168 kW) M54 3.0L inline-6. Also, a new 525i was introduced featuring a 184 hp (137 kW) M54 2.5L inline-6 and a slightly cheaper price. Meanwhile, the 540i was given more power, totalling 290 hp (216 kW).
For the 2002 model year, BMW Steptronic-equipped E39s had their manual shift direction switched to match BMW's SMG cars. Now to upshift, you had to pull back the lever, instead of pushing forward as in the pre-2002 models. From 2001-03, the E39 model range sold in the USA consisted of the 525i, 530i, 540i and M5. The 2002 E39s bore no external differences to the 2001 model year.
The 2003 model year was the last year for the E39 sedans; they were differentiated by the addition of extra chrome trim on the trunk (boot) and on the sides of the body. The E39 wagon (touring / estate) was continued into the 2004 model year, per the usual practice at BMW, until the touring version of the new E60 5 Series was released. Engine and transmission choices remained unchanged for 2002, 2003 and 2004 models.

hi, i got my 528 uk spec recond from a used car dealer dec 2006 for only rm75k but bear in mind i m the second owner in malaysia. what ever it is, rm95k is overprced even with bodykit. do take note that the car is 10 years old this year and there are a lots of things to be replaced.

i spent about rm13k for all the wear and tear, such as wheel bearing, abs sensor, front disc, water pump, radiator, tie rod, control arm, seat met sensor, coupling, control arm, stabliser link, shock absorber (all 4) etc etc. Respray and windscreen lining not in yet ...

those are the things which are very difficult to identify during inspection, they come after some times you got the car.

personally, i think better save the money for the wear and tear unless the woner got service records to show that those items has been changed recently.

cheers.

bro,

thanks for your info.
i found 1 e39 528i year 2001 selling around rm103k...
i will fry to kl after chinese new year to see that car.
hopefully the car still around that time.
will try to nego under 100k...
how do you think?

e39 528i

Bro,

First thing first. Get the vehicle VIN no. and check in www.realoem.com. You would know the car's year of manufacture. I don't know whether 528i production spilled into 2001.

There are a few optional accessories that came with the car that u should be aware...pin point which one u want. Local sepc, UK spec and Japan spec have quite a big difference. The price depends on the car condition and its service history. Complete service history is a must. If the car is really a 2001 model, then RM100k is reasonable...PROVIDED the car is in perfect working condition complete with proof of service history.

Hi Alex, didn't see your thread before about e39. I don't really go through all intro threads, but tend to read specific questions.

Year 2001 is most likely the registration, please verify. I'm not sure I'm correct to say that M52 528 stop product on Aug, 2000. Local 528 was from 99-2000 May, while other right hand drive country production was until 2000 August.

You can try verify the production date if you have the VIN of the car in here http://bmwfans.info.

brotherrrrr...

thanks for all your info!:top:
i'll try to get more info from that guy.
how if the car didn't have the service history?

Services History is good but not every owner kept it, and sometime when they sold to Car dealer they also don't pass it down, so you will find most car selling without the history, but yes it is safe to say reserve RM10K for all the tears/Wears and after that you have more confidence on your car.. it is a learning experience.... just like me.. learning everyday...

Since you are flying here why not call a few more place and view as many cars as possible. When you finally get one in KL why not get everything fixed/service here before sending the car back to KK.

yeah ... i think they are right, no more 528 in 2001.

if u are getting a mech to check ur car, make sure they r using the original bmw software to run a full test. i learned this from my mech : if the on board computer display/dialog kapur and the owner did not replace it with original new (meaning replacing it with a used unit), you won't be able to upgrade you computer software in the future and by running a full test, the computer can tell you whether your on board computer display/dialo is original or used unit. it will cost about rm5k to have one replace.

cheers.

i try to called few car dealer in KL and everyone of them say the same answer...
2001..........
i saw few cars post in motortrader mag and some 100k++ but some 85k++...
and all of them wrote acc free...

The last production is Sept-2000, and some of the cars arrived here on 2001 depending on the shipment and arriving date.

The registration can be 2001, best is to get the your BMW Serial/chasis Number (last 7 digits of your VIN) and go to this site http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do, you will get the full details of your car.

Many of the them CBU are registered oversea before shipped to Malaysia to avoid high tax as a used car though it is brand new with less than 1000KM mileage.
