my E30 m20b20 had gone wrong lately...water temp needle moves unstably...so anyone sell the speedometer here?and is it normal that the temperature goes more than 3/4 of the gauge?everything seems to be fine but the water temp is high...the radiator serviced before, and the engine is overhauled before(i think most probably not this because i have changed 3 times of this engine, they got the same problem...HOT!)and what is the symptoms if the engine is overheat?

Hi enche yim..

3/4 of the gauge was abnormality....normal just in the midle of the gauge or below of that...Try check ur thermostat, maybe not function. Or bleeding ur cooling system. What's engine u use bro?? motronic or L-jet?? Sometimes head problem also can be a symtoms of this case.

my one is l-jetronic, and bleeding the cooling system is just loosen a small nut on top of the valve cover side right?
and if it is a head problem, the coolant will be decrease slowly but my coolant level is remain the same...
so where can i get the speedometer because i think it because of the speedometer....

Yim, what has water temperature problem got to do with your speedometer ?

I think he suspected the temp gauge, which in embedded in the speedo or rather, instrument cluster is problemmatic. So he wanted to replace the entire thing including the speedo, odo, tacho, fuel, etc cluster at one go..

Just like when tyre botak, replace the car la.. :p

Maybe the old engine has potted the head and running with increased compression.

things to check for m20 engine
1. fan clutch - notoriously famous for high temp in e30
2. aux fan - check if low speed is working or not
3. thermostat - has to be changed every year unless its ori bmw which will only last 2 years
4. waterpump - tricky to diagnose, only experts inc myself can hear the noise from the engine if the waterpump bearing is kaput
5. engine temp sensor - change it if you think the gauge and temp is not right
6. grounding terminals behind the inst cluster
7.

if your oil cap has brown mud/sludge, then possible cyl head leak ,o ther then that it will be one of those things above that i have mention , nothing else.....

sorry if i was wrong,i mean my temp gauge is like a loosen needle, it will be swinging here and there, so i can't get the accurate signal, so would it be the engine temp sensor's problem or the gauge's problem?

my clutch fan is like a jammed direct fan so it spins as fast as the engine rpm, because i wanna maximize the fan speed.

the aux fan is definitely well function because it will on when the aircond is on, the speed is fast too

thermostat and water pump are ok because i always perform coolant flushing, the the water flow is fast when the engine is hot.

about the grounding terminal behind the inst cluster, where is it located?

then about the brown colored mud/sludge, i just found that something yellowish brown colored oil came out from the head cover. so is the cylinder head is damaged?

how much will it cost to do a top overhaul?

head gasket koyak.. need to spend $$$ to do top overhaul...

water leaking into the oil lines...

but my coolant didnt get less...so is it any other problem?

based on wat u hv shared, its called kopi susu where water has entered into yr engine. oil + water = kopi susu/horlick. :)

but when u saw the yellowish/brown, is it from your oil cap or you have removed your engine head valve cover casing?

Just curious when teejay said that thermostats must be replaced every year, does this apply to M40 as well and what's the reason? They wear out that fast and start providing inaccurate readings?

their lifespan, especially the non-original ones, is unpredictable, you can leave it until it spoilts, but i must tell you that when it stops functioning so will your engine.....geddit?

i think the yellowish brown is came out from the engine head valve cover gasket, i think it will be fine after applying some gasket gum...

and i think i have found the problem, when the rpm is low, the engine overheat, when the rpm is higher, the temp still bearable, so today i fix my own car in the workshop while my manager went out for meeting, but i couldn't finish it today, because i took out the fan clutch and modify a double electric fans set to mount on it, the space is pretty narrow so i need to spend a very high cost to just get the fan set at the chop shop... hopefully it helps because one of the fan can gives higher speed than the fan clutch already, now i got two, the sound is a bit louder than MBenz double fans, terror!!
