Hi guys, driving E39 523 '99 Double VANOS. My torque converter died on me recently, so my mechanic recommended might as well change the whole gearbox the car already has 230k++ mileage. So he installed rebuilt one. Seems ok at first but after a while(same day) there is a jerk(clunk?) and the Automatic Transmission light came on, then felt that the gear seems to be slipping(like when press half clutch on a manual car). Was worried so pulled the car over and shut down. But after restart everything was ok. After a while again a jerk the the gear was completely free. Again everything fine after restart. Took the car back top the mechanic and he said he forget to reset the ECU. After reseting the same problem occurred twice. Then my Alternator failed. Got a new one to replace. He said problem might be cause by the old faulty alternator cause not enough power to the gearbox(?). Yesterday the Automatic Transmission light appeared again(gear with "!") When the light appears all the gear indication turns off (P/R/N/D...) After restart everything seems fine. What is the problem? Faulty gearbox? Gearbox mounting? Wiring? Electrical? Please help.

The only way to diagnose this issue would be to send it to a reputable ZF specialist to have him scan the gearbox TCU for error messages.

Everytime I take the car to the mechanic, the error light is not on... No error light means the car is ok...

everyone are facing gearbox problem for E39. mind to share where and how much you change your rebuilt gearbox

It does not matter whether the GB light is ON or not. The error is recorded and store in the GB module.
You need to clear the alarm and run the engine again. If the GB got problem, the alarm will be generated again.

ECU alarm reset does not clear the GB alarm. Different modules lar.

The gearbox TCU will have all error codes stored in its memory even if the car is re-started. Plugging it into a OBD scanner should allow you to determine what is going wrong with the gearbox.

Hahahaha... i'll let you guys know tomorrow after i go pick up my car.
Gearbox died on me last month and car will be ready tomorrow.

Car was sent to M1 in Kayu Ara.

Bishop, many possible factors go with the cheapest ones first

1. the famous jerk is the atf oil not sufficient, get the oil level check, usuall suspect after gearbox change, first time never right.

2. could be the ecu..some times they are faulty..

3.or get the replaced gearbox changed again..

4. sure the gearbox is the right model for your car, certain models dun match, ayam-itik talk..

alternater is just luck it died, nothing link to gearboxes..

cheers..

Thanks pussy.
The gearbox came with 6 months warranty. Problem I am in KK now. Need to send it over from KL. No extra car le...
Will send it backnto check the oil levels. Usually how many litres it needs?

your mechanic would have filled them up when the gearbox was done, so a small top up would be 1 to 1.5 liters...

do a small surge test to see if the oil is enough.. do a 50 km/h fast braking, car stops to standstill then, accelerate immediately up. if the car moves, then ok, if hesitates, then less oil...

Thanks Pussy, Will give it a try and report...

I assume that he fills it up to the top when it is done. That means that there is some "settlement" when moving...?

Gave the option to M1 to either rebuild or replace gearbox when i left my car with them in December. They were initially adamant on replacing with a reconditioned unit while i preferred to rebuild if possible, so i left them the option to choose based on what they diagnose after the gearbox came down.

Collected my car yesterday and kinda remember getting a call earlier that morning (through my medicated state of mind) to say the gearbox was reconditioned.

Total repair bill came to about RM7,800 for the total, out of which RM6500 was for reconditioning of gearbox which included changing the clutch, oil seals, machining the torque converter, and some other things which i can't remember at the moment.

The balance was for workmanship, ATF oil change, tax, etc... overall am ok with the price as long as the gearbox doesn't fail on me in the near future.

I've experienced this situation at december '09...send my car to RGB at ulu kelang...I've to pay RM5000 for all the works (rebuilt)..now my car in good condition..hopefully this thing will never be happen again to me....:)

sent my car to the mech, he said there might be a problem with some seloniod or something. He will get a replacement from KL. But I not yet send the car in yet as I got no car to use... :(

my GB "conked" on me last week.
did dyno and was the fault of 2 switches.
changed them and everything ok
costs me around 700

For RM5000 to rebuilt i think is exclude rebuilt touque converter. it seem outside there got alot of price. i done my rebulit ar RM8000 but with 2 years warranty.

Bro sewell, wah rm8k comes with 2 yrs warranty? sounds not too bad, but 8k is huge bro..pheww

JFT63,

what to do, want the car to move. have to pay lo, and pll says this machanic is good.

what do you all meant by rebuilt ? Is it repair only or change the recond gear box ? For me anything big spare parts also using recond spare parts and dont have any problem also.hehehehehehehe

That happened to me twice, and i had to change the valvebody and clutch on the 2 different occasions. Cost me around RM2.5 k for each. But if i remember correctly the time i changed the clutch they changed the transmission fluid aswell. And the shop told me must use the BMW oil or the gearbox will kaput again. I sent to this guy in Kayu Ara @ Classics. Quite a reliable chap.
