Guys, the gear box oil cooler, do we need to change it or any of u guys have change it. Its a square silver colour box below your expansion tank (it has two hose connected to your ATF coz your ATF fuild run throught it & its also connected to your expansion tank). Someone told me that if it leak, the coolant from the expansion tank may sip into the gear box oil cooler hence it will mix with your ATF in your gearbox and your gearbox KABOMMMMMMMMMMM.............wallet koyak. any idea?

Yeap..if it leaks you definitely have to changed...just changed mine in M speed last weekend...

Sad to say i didn't notice the problem with this...so my gearbox died...:( cost me 7k just to fix a second hand one....

but i dun think visual inspection can determine if the gear box oil cooler rosak or not. am i right? so what is the recommended mileage to change it? yours rosak at what mileage? its about RM 600+ to change it as preventive maintenance rather than spending 7k changing the gear box later. mine is 85,000km, should change?

if u worry then change lo

sum time i wanto tell u la

we human cannot worry too much

like u see alot cars outside

if u drive out later kena bang

more than 7k ler damage

just enjoy ur life :)

my 2cent ...............

I also woud like to know how long can the thing last before a change is needed....

Well..only if it leaks...then changed..if it is in good condition, no point....the work shop will be able to tell whether it is leaking or not...good luck.

are saying, only to change it, if it's leaking? so, can we inspect it ourself or have to get to the mechs to take out the expansion tank to check them..

no mileage to indicate time for change? lifespan 3-5yrs?

a bit too late for that case?

that thing is attached to the radiator for cooling, coz it used for oil cooling normally will last very long unlike cendensor or radiator that have more corrosive fluid....you can chk your self from the bottom and pls chk of u have langgar anything from the bottom or accident which more likely to coz the damage.....just my 2 sen :D

just changed mine yesterday at 85,000km. will give a breakdown price later in E46 parts & maintenance. I ask M-speed & MSP auto about this issue of visual inspection, both of them say the same thing that cannot see wheather rosak or not (not like tyre or wiper can inspect for wear). average life span around 100,000KM for the oil cooler, but MSP auto encounter that 90,000 already rosak. since the oil cooler is around 600+ (not very expensive) i did not wanna take the risk and just change it (rather than incuring more expenses on the gearbox later) just my opinion. if u wait until it leak only change, it might be too late
