How can check what is the problem and i also do not see the reserve tank light on.

Thanks

The wire from the fuel sender is about to break. Remove the seat and check the resistance value of the right (driver side).. 9 out 10 this is the cause of the problem.

im facing almost the same problem. mr jarance, what should i looking for when i remove the seat, how's the thing look like? rear seat or front?

thanx in advance.

I am not about e30 but I think the E30 should be the same..

Just remove the rear seat. Under the seat there should be 2 oval covers. One on the right and the other on the left.

Open the oval cover (4 screws) on the driver side and you be able to see the fuel pump and the fuel sender.

there should be two cables (connectors) to the pump. One of them is for the pump and the other for the fuel sender. If I am not mistaken the connector are black and the other is white.

Check the resistance with an ohm meter for both connectors. the fuel sender should have a resistance of about 10 ohms to about 800 ohms (depend on much fuel in the tank). The motor resistance should be lower in value.

if one of the connector is having open circuit (high value), then the cable or the resistance thread is worn out.

eh

Really technical, does this mean we need to have the red led at one of the wire and the black led at the other one, and then see if it between 10 to 800 ohms then is ok, if more then 800 ohms then it is out, after confirming what should we change or trouble shoot.

By the way after removing the back seat yes there is two oval shape cover driver side would be big and passenger side would be small. How about the reserve tanks light, how to check.

It is got to do with the float?

Thanks

for the facelifted E30 318i, the signal is on the right side..
Just remove the rear seat and you'll find a black metal cover secured by 4 screws.. Can't miss it.. And AFAIK, for the M40 version, only 1 fuel level sensor.

once you remove the cover, you're see the fuel pump top bracket with the fuel sensor. For the earlier M20 version with external fuel tank, I heard that there are 2 sensor, on both sides of the fuel tank.

Thanks went through the steps.

But unfortunatelly the pump is different as the m40 come with 4 fuel line and there is two connector one for the fuel pump and the other for the fuel sender, disconnect and recond it hopo it would havee a better connction.

Any advice on how to remove and check due to the multiple fuel line, also how to remove the light buld for the reserve lamp, tried to remove it under the dash but it is too tight to turn.

cheers

I think it is better that you get somebody to help you or send it to the mechanic.

Hmmm

I guess i have no choice, need to get someone that really know in and out of an e30 for advice and help, jarance really appreciate the advice and guidance.

Thanks

BTW, Aero,

Could you post some pictures of the fuel pump and fuel line. Maybe some of the E30 guy can give you a pointer.
