F1 cars in 2008

Perhaps those engineering inclined can enlighten us on how the CDG rear wings are supposed to result in more overtaking?

I read that the car following behind won't be affected as much aerodynamically compared to the present wings, but how so?

it would encourage overtaking if the design can reduce or eliminate the 'dirty air' pocket behind the car causing reduced downforce for the car following close behind, like what is happening now.

The air over the wheels are already "dirty". Dont think that design is going to be as effective as current design.

Watching the water spray in a wet F1 race will never be the same in 2008....

From the graphics posted by E46F, it shows the air flow (can also call it turbulence) pattern generated by the conventional and CDG wings. Clearly the effect on the car following behind would be more positive with the CDG wings, ie; should have less turbulence (air flow more uniform judging from the direction of the arrows) and hence better downforce overall and facilitate more overtaking.

Yeah, I couldnt agree more. I would include Renault to be in there as well. Honda will and may have one of the most powerful engines on the grid but I believe they will suffer again in the aero department.

Honda's Suzuka special was good but I believe Renault who debuted their Spec E engine in the final race was the envy of the paddock. Its an amazing piece of engineering, and was a one off engine for a single race (final race). According to the team, they did not get the chance to fully unleash it during the race due to unique race circumstances, and even so, they totally blew Mc Laren away in terms of pace. Kimi stated that the Renaults were blindingly fast at the final race with the new engine and they just could not keep up.
