hey guys;My E60 is M54b22... this is kindda odd, at times, when i drive at low rpm i.e.; accelerating after a sharp turn, i notice the car jerks... its so difficult to describe, some examples are like1) if you drive a manual and trying to get uphill with a third gear ... it jerks right? but if you accelerate, then it becomes ok2) As if not much fuel or air is going to the combustion chamberbrought it to my mech, and system says nothing is wrong. I read about M54 vanos seal upgrades, but my mech says its useless..Last month i did some major repairs, the engine **kaput** on me. Suddenly the engine won't start. The mech checked and said there was some traces of water in the plugs. So his repairs was1) 1 nos Valve cover gasket2) 15 nos rubber seal3) 6 ignition coils with plugs4) camshaft sensor inlet5) camshaft sensor outletall in all about RM5,000Don't know what to do anymore... i regret the fact that i spent 5k on repairs... should have chucked in a M54B25 instead :(

I am not surprised to hear your mechanic saying it is useless to replace vanos seals. In fact many so called BMW specialist won't know much about vanos seals problems and how & why degraded vanos seals could effect the performance of the engine especially the low end torque. You can read more about the vanos seals here... http://www.beisansystems.com/index.html

The 5 items listed above for RM5,000 is rather expensive in my opinion.

could be the oxygen sensor or the fuel pump filter. check the pump wiring and the filter is not clogged.

Thanks Herbert.

I am having this jerking problem and some say GB problem and maybe DME problem..... One of my mechanic manage to found out that one of my cylinder is misfiring and change the ignition coil but the problem still persist....hopefully it due to the vanos and not others. Btw, does it cost alot to have the seal change?

Steven,

What's your e60 engine code number? Usually degraded vanos seals will not cause jerking problem. Vanos seals replacement plus labor should be around RM 500. Give a call to Jason and let him diagnose your jerking problem.

Guess steven is having the same problem as mine. I think its time to refer my baby to optimum. Its really tough to find a reliable mech. Just because we drive bmw they tend to cut throat. My trusted years of trusted mech only repairs japs. So till date i send my honda thr, but as for bimmer, still searching for a honest reliable mech...

Btw steven, i changed my coils twice in two years ...

bmcaz, i think i know what u meant by the jerking, it's like the gearbox dun really drop a gear when u need to the pick up like when u wanna overtake the car in front rite? that's why u feel the car like jerky, this kinda situation happens, most of the time i just clear the gearbox adaptation using the diagnostic tool and drive 5-10km to relearn the gearbox. u should try it.. regards

Try switching to v-power and see if it still persists. I had the same issue as well so during my last fill up I opted for v-power and I don't have the issue anymore going uphill. To get to my place I have to drive up a hill everyday so I can say that the drop in power is non existent after the petrol switch to v-power :)

Before this i was using 95, now im using 97, definately reduced the jerk, but it is still there. However in my humble opinion fuel quality shouldnt effect much as the fuel quality sensor should be adjusting accordingly.

I think i will make a short trip to melaka as per bro bala recommendation. My mech tried reseting the gear using the diagnostic tool but no improvement. Ive never updated the software since 2009 when i got it. The car is year 2004

someone with m5 was telling me previously that the last bottom item in the list to check is the brake pump due to some weird functional connectivity... no idea if its true....

BMcaz,

I experienced the same type of situation when i bought my recond UK spec 525i. Went to the dealer's mechanic , he said you go and try driving long distance. He said, sometimes due to many test drives by numerous people, the car cannot adjust properly. The mecha said , u go and drive long distance first.

Second mecha said, there could be a problem with the "torque converter". Aiyo. That mecha showed me an object which looks like a bronze snail like creature from the ocean. Second hands cost around Rm7k. What tha! So i went back to the first mecha n after repairing the rims which he said is slightly damaged due to potholes, he told me the same thing, try go driving for long distance first and let the car adjusts itself.

Well, i dont know how "intelligent" this BMW is, but supprisingly, after a few days drive of long distance, the car started to feel smoother and smoother.

Im still testing my car for thoser sporadic jerkings but somehow im feeling much better to know that i dont have to change my torque converter.

Cheers!

Ron 95 and Ron 97 is about GHV (gross heating value).......high heating value with complete combustion will generate more power.......bared in mind after few years, the mechanical efficiency will drop.....

dear bmcaz

tq

I will try to replace the valve body, desbimmer also replaced it not long a go, you can check with him how's the performance...

my friend said the problem is fuel separator @ crankcase-ventilation/oil separator.

Solved the problem with gearbox adaptation and vanos seal replacement :)
