Hi,I realized my E39 525 M54 is eating up my fully synthetic engine oil very fast. There is no sign of leaking whatsoever, even the engine undercover no signs of wet spot.Any ideas what could be the culprit of engine oil eating cause? Need to top up about 3 liters of oil every 1000km. This is serious. My ride's mileage about 230k km.

3 litres per 1000km? this is no joke. if u are sure no external leakage than likely will be internal leakage that engine oil getting into combustion camber and burnt off.

Herbert is right, try using thicker oil if it's proven no leakage. Try something like Castrol Edge Sport 10w-60 or Petronas 1000?

3 litre for every 1000kms? Wow thats crazy, mine previously with a leaking oil sump gasket and oil filter housing gasket (leaking at 2 places) was not even close to that, about 1 liter per 3000/4000 kms.

Actually, this is a good oil. Value for money, why not?

Thats what I thought. BMW says 'BMW recommends Castrol' on its oil cap, so I'm only obliging, but on a budget hehe.

3 liters per 1000km is a bit excessive.

Do you see any white smoke when the engine is warm up and rev high.

check your CCV --> crankcase ventilation system.yr ccv vlv maybe koyak oledi or yr ccv vlv drain tube back into the oil sump is blocked.this is one of the possibility for hi oil consumption.
the ccv is under yr inlet manifold and the drain tube connects the ccv to the dip stick....

Likely to be bad valve guide seals that allow the engine oil to be sucked into the combustion chamber and burn off. Suggest to replace the seals first and see the effect. This seal change cures the oil eating habit of my son's e39 525i

What is the rating of your full synthetic oil?
I'm using Shell Helix Ultra 5w-40

bought the parts and am changing the oil sump gasket on wednesday. never thought of the oil filter housing gasket..any sign can tell that is leaking as well?

woah..that sounds expensive...how much does the CCV cost?

you have either worn valve stem seals, or worn piston rings. a temporary solution is to go for thicker oil like 15w50.

Hi Kht, how much did it cost to change the seals? Thanks

Mine also seems to consume abt 1 liter of oil approx per 1000kms. Only happens if I drive fast on the highway often. City driving will be like every 2000kms.

Looks like it has something to do with speed?

No apparent leaks and no blue/white smoke either. But I am using a semi 5w-40 oil. Maybe I need to use mineral 20w-50 as the engine is getting older hence more wear and tear.

Sometimes it is hard to see the white smoke, you can check the tail pipe of the exhaust, wipe the inside with a clean tissue. If the deposit is thick and black then you are burning oil. Otherwise it should be fine grey dust or quite clean.

Like this is it mean go to top overhaul ? If top overhaul dont go to BW World in Desa Tun Razak. Now the shop rename to "M Motor Garage". Their price is expensive and the job is super worst.

Strong manglish words! It's only fair after we hear the other side of the story. My 2sen worth.

the 5w-40 is too thin bro. maybe you'd get performance but not protection at high temp. try switch to other viscosity say 10w or 15w. older engine is not recommended using the 5w unless it is a new engine or has been overhauled. any signs of smoke or oil leak at the engine?
