Don't worry, your car is fine. I posted up this thread when I had my E46 328 last time but I can't find the thread anymore. The sifus in the forum assured me that all is well, so don't worry.
Try putting the pedal to the metal when your is in D the next time the traffic lights turns green. It will definitely move off from 1. under normal circumstances, your car will move off from 2nd gear. You can confirm this when you shift to steptronic mode and let it downshift by itself when you come to a standstill. You will see that it will move off from 2.
Other than that method, you can also roughly estimate the number of times it changes gear when you leave it at D and just drive off. Just count it mentally and my bet is, your car will move off from 2nd gear if you drive off smoothly.

I got the same problem with my e39 525i like the one OPP experienced. I ran into a heavy rain and soggy road in shah alam last thursday and 2 hours into the driving pleasure my nightmare begin. Suddenly ABS and ASC+T lights on and the car just went to safe mode (20km/hr). In the morning i cranked it and it went well but just for about 15 minutes and the car started crawling again. I went to BMW workshop (allegedly former AB mechanic) in kuantan and after diagnostics test.. the computer says "Front left wheel - wiring" and "ASC+T deactivated"
The mechanic told me apart from the cracking on the sensor plug on my front left wheel, the O2 sensor was also faulty. My car is still sitting in my garage awaiting for the sensor replacement... what do you thing buddies.. pls gimme a good news as my pocket is running low..

when my ASC alarm light lighted, my mechanic told me it may be my ABS/ASC controller kaput. He offered to clean the sensors (at the wheels) but told me if it is the ABS/ASC controller problem, the alarm light will light up again.
Sure enough, after a few days, the alarm light went on again. i actually went to another workshop for a second opinion, but was told the same thing - it is most probably my ABS/ASC controller defective.
Finally changed the controller and the problem was rectified - no more ASC indicator lighted up.
