Dude

sounds that your problem is more serious than mine.....

Oh bugger.

My car has been like that since new, and that's about five and a half years ago. AB plugged in their diagnotics thingy to my car and concluded that my car's gearbox was fine.

Hi wglee,

Don't worry, your car is fine. I posted up this thread when I had my E46 328 last time but I can't find the thread anymore. The sifus in the forum assured me that all is well, so don't worry.

Try putting the pedal to the metal when your is in D the next time the traffic lights turns green. It will definitely move off from 1. under normal circumstances, your car will move off from 2nd gear. You can confirm this when you shift to steptronic mode and let it downshift by itself when you come to a standstill. You will see that it will move off from 2.

Other than that method, you can also roughly estimate the number of times it changes gear when you leave it at D and just drive off. Just count it mentally and my bet is, your car will move off from 2nd gear if you drive off smoothly.

What a relief! Thanks for the info, roland1888.

Sorry, a bit off topic - my pre-facelift E46 325i always starts in 2nd gear when left in "D" unless I stomp on the accelerator. It only starts in 1st gear if I shift it to "S". Is this normal?

Yup. Its normal.

Hi guys
I got the same problem with my e39 525i like the one OPP experienced. I ran into a heavy rain and soggy road in shah alam last thursday and 2 hours into the driving pleasure my nightmare begin. Suddenly ABS and ASC+T lights on and the car just went to safe mode (20km/hr). In the morning i cranked it and it went well but just for about 15 minutes and the car started crawling again. I went to BMW workshop (allegedly former AB mechanic) in kuantan and after diagnostics test.. the computer says "Front left wheel - wiring" and "ASC+T deactivated"
The mechanic told me apart from the cracking on the sensor plug on my front left wheel, the O2 sensor was also faulty. My car is still sitting in my garage awaiting for the sensor replacement... what do you thing buddies.. pls gimme a good news as my pocket is running low..

rain rain go away!!!

dude

Sorry to hear about your car. After my incident, I have avoided the best I can to drive in very heavy rain. Guess the sensors are just to sensitive to too much water.

You did mention that your sensor cracked??

Yeah buddy, that's what the mechanic told me "sensor cracked".. I just got a call from the same mechanic that my O2 sensor also kapoot.. i have read in this forum that e39 will run at 40km/hr at safe mode, while mine is only doing 20km/hr and now can only crawl at 10km/hr.. is that got to do with O2 sensor as well? Having a bimmer made me feel good but attending to its problem really made me dumb.. hehehe somebody please help

ABS+ASC Brake signal on on driving panel

Hi just to check you guys who got this problem........i check with the mechanic and do some DIS found that the front left sensor got problem...the mechanic try to replace but the light still on....

he told me the ABS+ASC controller caput.....but i don't trust them since DIS would definitely show the error code...but this time none...

I try to find out if the relay problem...but not sure where this this located...any idea????

if i bring to BMW service center how much it will cost me??........

ssali,

when my ASC alarm light lighted, my mechanic told me it may be my ABS/ASC controller kaput. He offered to clean the sensors (at the wheels) but told me if it is the ABS/ASC controller problem, the alarm light will light up again.

Sure enough, after a few days, the alarm light went on again. i actually went to another workshop for a second opinion, but was told the same thing - it is most probably my ABS/ASC controller defective.

Finally changed the controller and the problem was rectified - no more ASC indicator lighted up.

EML stands for Elektronische Motorleistungsregelung (Electronic Trottle/Power Control in English)
It's the Trottle control unit which is attached to the trottle underneath the the intake manifold or Trottle body. It is round with the butterfly plate inside which opens for air intake every time you excelerate. Simillar to a carburator

Pardon my ignorance, but what does EML stands for?

bro, i've got the same issue..how much is the unit?

A faulty ABS is a common problem on e39 as the controller unit is quite close to the manifold and thus subjected to high heat exposure and made worst with our climate. The error detected usually points to the rear ABS sensors. Eventually your speedo meter will not be functioning. In the US and UK, there are many who rebuild the unit at a fraction of the price of a new one.... I am going to try doing it on my brother in-laws unit and will update u guys on the result...

chiow...

i put a heatshielf around my ABS unit to protect from the heat of the exhaust manifold.

I just kena this very expensive problem. I'm interested to know how you protect it? Where you get this heat sheild?

Thanks.
