Hi All, Can the tire shop repair a punctured tire that was filled with emergency tire sealant such as those conti kits or BMW M mobility kit? Some articles mentioned that the tires be replaced after the emergency fix. While there was one article that mentioned about needing proper equipment, disposal facilities and training to remove the tire and drained the sealant off. The article just mentioned about removing the sealant but it did not expressively mention that the tires can be repaired/patched. But why take the trouble to drain out the sealant if it is not to repair the tires? Maybe you need specialised training to remove tires filled with sealant in preparation to replace the tires.

i thought all e90s run with RFT??

Yes they do but some owners change to non-RFT after their RFT wore off.

So their solution is to:

1. buy portable air compressor and run to the nearest tire shop.
2. buy emergency tire sealant to temporarily seal the puncture.

I guess i was not clear that i was referring to non-RFT, sorry about the confusion. Anyway i am still waiting for those people who actually adopted solution 2 to give their experience.

I got the M Mobility kit but no flat yet to use it. The Air compressor is good used it many times for the kids bike and loaned it to a colleague who had a flat to pump it up and allowing him to limp to the tyre shop to fix the flat. Most time with tubeless tyres these days, the leak is not that drastic and you may be lucky to fill air and limp to the nearest tyreshop without using sealant. For more serious leaks and over longer distances yeah the sealant comes to play.

Based on what I read, not all sealants are equal. The BMW Mobility kit sealant can be removed without too much pain for a repair and is even friendly for TPMS sensors. Some sealants will permanently destroy the tire, wheels and TPMS sensors (if you have them).

Sealant itself will patch the leak.. so do you still need to patch the "sealant patched" tyre?

No point asking this question to the tyre manufacturer or SC because they will just tell u to replace the damage tyre for safety reason.

Seriously, I dare not push a patched tyre to above 200kph.. no way! Even above 180kph is dangerous because tyre suffer a lot of stress.

Based on the instruction manual, the sealant is only meant as a temporary fix for you to drive to the tireshop to get it replaced/fixed. Something like max 80 or 100 km/h only with the sealant.

Thanks for the reply but what took you guys so long. I was begining to wonder that nobody have any experience with this sealant thing.

So E46F, where did you get the information that the sealant can be remove easily and it won't damage the TPMS? Is it stated in your mobility kit manual?

Astroboy, the sealant is for emergency use only. You must replace or get it repaired.

Anyway I just change tires for another car a few days back and have the opportunity to ask the tire shop owner about this issue. He says it is a not a problem. They have to remove the tire, drain the sealant and clean up before patching the tire.

The BMW M Mobility kit uses water based latex sealants which is easy to remove. I read about this in forums. Do a google on it, it should show up. I gotta check the manual to see if it states that its easy to remove. Non latex based sealants are a PITA to remove from what I read.

Just curious, is there an expiry date on the mobility kit's sealent?

Yeah that was my understanding too. The article mentioned about training and disposal procedures for tire professionals regarding tire sealants. But then they are referring to overseas shop where the legislation is more strict.

I think it is important that the choice of sealant should allow easy removal and to repair the tires otherwise have to replace both tires (so that the tires are balance on the same axle). That would be a big waste of money.

yes, i m curious to know too if it has a shelf life since i bought 2 sealants as spare.

Can I get the mobility kit at AB sungai besi? What is the price?

Have had one tyre deflate at a faster pace than the others for some time now. Finally took it in yesterday to check it out and found that it was a nail . Tyre shop patched it up and said there is no issue even if it is an RFT. DOes the rft actually have a sealant inside or not? The poor guy really struggled to push the plug in. Amazingly I have not had any warning of the deflating tyre on my console. I top up every week and this particular tyre was typically about 5-10 psi below the others.

Interesting! .. and I thot the rft indicator is so reliable, never check my air pressure for a long while. Maybe we have to go flat only the indicator will pick up.. :p .. and being rft tyre, the super hard side wall is keeping the shape of the tyre in check, thus minimal change in tyre circumference is felt despite 30% loss of air pressure.

This is good solution especially for those running on 18" with no spares!!

Can it be used with other car or model?
Where can we get the mobility kit?
How much?

Regards

Bro, where to buy the BMW Mobility Kit ? How much does it cost ?

I bought mine from Singapore and paid RM500 for it. You can buy it at any authorized dealers but if I am not mistaken its ~RM700+ here. If you want it cheaper, can buy from Singapore or get folks like Stuttgart and Obermaier to bring it in for you.

eh..i wonder if i can use the Mobility kit compressor to pump air into my tyres?
coz very scary to do it at petrol kiosk, might be a target of hi-jackers/ robbers!

You should try it to see if it works and to know how to use it. But if you use it all the time, be prepared for it to konk out because these things are designed for emergency use and are not heavy duty. The pumps at kiosks are free, the mobility kit is not. :)

Well the mobility kit comes with adapters for you to pump balls, bicycle tyres, floats etc. So I guess to some extent they cater for these kinda uses as well. But you are right. They prob have a MTBF and hope it doesn't KO just when you need it LOL. Externally, the pump is not flimsy and is pretty well built.
