any ideas? just running on the engine fan now but the car still heats up if i get stuck in traffic...

There are two switched that controls the electric fan. One switch is activated when the refrigerant gas pressure (A/C) builds up (check on the gas piping) and the other which is located beside the radiator. Try bypassing each of them. IF it still does not work, then maybe your fan has already kaput

I don't know about E30 but I say this on my E32

When A/C on : Fan will switch low speed regardless temp- good test for your fan is still working.

Short the Temp switch beside the Radiator : 1 should run low speed and the other run high speed. Also good to test for your fan able to run full speed.

If you confirm your fan are healthy then time to look at your temp switch (faulty) or you have air pocket in system which "cheat " temp gauge sensor saying you having high temp !

or you need new fan clutch.

Cheers

Could be relay problem - most likely, poor contact. Try unplugging and replugging the relay. Have same problem with e-fan and a-c. Just have to re-establish contact.

anybody want to come n give me a hand? first of all its an M50 n wouldn't know where to start...

Where do you live? You might want to take it to an electrical specialist.

I know an old man who is quite good at electrical diagnosis, Mr Lee. He works from the Shell station on Jalan Pahang, just after McDs.

Something else occured to me. When was the last time that the e-fan was replaced?

Could it be old age? Try tapping on the motor housing of the electric fan. This should dislodge some of the carbon from the motor. Might be cheaper to replace tho, in the long run. Engines do not like too much heat.

Hope this helps.

it was working fine until we had to patch up a hole in the exhaust system and they somewhat dismantle the extractors as well and then it just stop working.
im in Pj..any other electricians around here?

Fuhrer, if its a M50, then the possible causes are listed as per above. If the electric is out, then check the resistor and you may be able to salvage the fan. Check the two "switches" first. Any mechanic will be able to do that. The easiest one to start on is the switch attached to the right side of the radiator, its a 3 point switch, just get a wire and short it and the electric fan should kick into high speed. :) If it doesnt, then chances are the fan is kaput. Then check the resistor which is attached to the fan for continuity, need a tester for that. :)
