Hi... It is just different terms referring to different brands of cars.

To be precise, during that time, BMW uses the term steptronic. And, I had the '96 528i CBU and is equipped with steptronic. Not sure about other models though but I guessed all models of the e39 series should be equipped with it.

Yes, single vanos is working fine. At least for mine until now... *touching wood*

My limited knowledge:

1. Steptronic used by BMW
2. Shiftronic/H-matic used by Hyundai
3. Tiptronic used by Porche/VW-Audi group
4. Geartronic used by Volvo
5. Touch-shift used by Mercedes
6. E-touch by Lexus

There are other "nic" this and "nic" that. They are gear systems coined by different car manufacturers.

The 2nd hand dealers normally just mixed up all these names.

thanks guys..

so every E39 from early model to late model has steptronic? so it's same as tiptronic (+- gear?)

or which E39 model doesn't has this ?

thanks

Dave

I believe it's steptronic. It's a different system from tiptronic but I do believe both are developed by ZF.

Yes, steptronic has +/-. In fact all these semi-auto or semi-manual systems have +/-.

Not all e39 has steptronic, especially those re-conditioned car brought in by grey importers. Especially for the e39 manufactured 1996 and early 1997 only. But all CKD units comes with Steptronic.

My first e39 is without steptronic. No big fuss about e39 without steptronic. I changed to the one with Steptronic is because I want to use the function, especially when taking fast corner or if you want to take the car to the limit.

Most of 39 drivers don't know how to use even the 'Sports' mode, so if the Steptronic is for 'show-off' , then no point to have that function. And the best story is, some of the owner not using it because 'sayang and takut rosak'.

for early E39s, CBU ones may or may not come with shiftronic as it is an expensive option during initial purchase. Our CKD versions were standard with shiftronic.

as for the single VANOS, it serves its purpose. but mine wasn't opening like it should be, before my overhaul...

BeemerSTER,

"but mine wasn't opening like it should be, before my overhaul..."
u meant the double vanos only start to work after u overhaul it ??

got u .. so CKD all hhas the shiftronic coming with ..
