hi guysmy 320ise seems to emit a slight rattling/vibration/clicking sound at 2000-2500 rpm. couldnt figure it out where the source from...it is running fine when it gets to 3000rpm and above. Wont hear it if I m driving in the city but once u r drivin thru the quiet area the sound is pretty audible thot it was the engine belting, initially...still cudnt get use to the 'diesel' engine sound for my beemer...japs car is refine in this area...

Perhaps you could be more specific on the rattling/vibration/clicking sound? Is the sound emitted from the engine bay or from the interior? Perhaps you could send the car to the SC to fix the problem.

I know what you mean about the 'diesel' sounding engine. This is a by-product of the valvetronic/double-vanos gadgetary. :(

i cudnt find the source...at idling there is no abnormal sound...put the gear to d and have the handbrake on...seems ok. it happens when running/accelerating from about 2000-25000 rpm. From the engine on interior? no idea...possibly from the dash console.removed all the loosed items in the interior - from the glove compartment, center console, drawer under the dash, coins in the ash-tray, heck i even removed the whole ash-tray, unfortunately to no avail

bring it to SC? obviosuly i will do eventually. but it wud be beneficial to post the problem here so we i can share it with you guys.and perhaps some of u can give some tips...i wudnt need this forum if i bring every single thing to the SC, wud i ;-)

I think you need to do some adjustment on the front bonnet cover. It could be something is touching against each other which cause the rattling sound. Adjustment can only be done by AB.

...megatnh, it would depend on where the sound eminates from. Did you drive at 2000rpm with the windows open to try & locate the source ?

...could be the bearings of your wheel axles, either front or back or perhaps both ends need to be replaced...
...it could be the exhaust system needs to be repaired or replaced...

...take it to an authorised BMW mechanic to have it repaired properly...

:D

Take it back to AB for warranty claim...not sure what it is, I need to hear the sound and it might be an N46B20 specific issue....I haven't heard of this on for the N52B30s....

It might be intake manifold due to hesitation/flat-spotting couple with the lower torque of your N46 engine. In that case a software update will address that. Its amazing how a simple software update can change the characteristic of the E90....GL and keep us posted.

at this stage I ll try to locate the source and understand the characteristic of the rattling noise.this way when I finally bring it to the SC I ll be able to describe and simulate the symptoms. I want to look smart when asking for the SC assitance. It would be disastrous if the problem is simply caused by coins in my ash tray ;)
I still suspect it is a mechanical problem thus will look for it 1st before go for software thingy..
the rattling seems to come from the dash console at 60-80kph when rpm is 1.8k-2.5k..

You're right on being able to simulate the exact problem when you're at the SC... There have been times when the problem would mysteriously hide itself when you reach the SC / workshop and then scratching head how to describe to the Service Assistant who knows half a nut about cars and then relayed the wrong symptoms to the mechanic (if you can call them mechanic). End of the day, your car comes out without the sound. And you're happy, but half a mile down the road, it's back again...

Anyway, just my rambling... Another way is to get together and let a few other guys scratch heads at the same time figure out where is the loose nut or extra nut...

Any impromptu TT session to help out fren here???

u got it right there..the other thing I don't want the AB mechanic to strip down and mess around with the whole console with no avail but leave me with more rattles to handle... I wud rather leave the current rattles alone as it gives me 1 more reasons to throttle up higher at more than 3k rpm... he he

mine is 320i SE CKD 2006..u reckon CKD QA is still substandard even after BMW HQ being a major shareholder?

i hope that's not the case, 1001 complaints about e46 CKD by fellow forummers. let's see what the other e90 CKD owners have to say...only time will tell bro.

I still think that you need to do some adjustment on the front bonnet cover. It could be something is touching against each other which cause the rattling sound. I have that problem on my car and it's fixed after doing some adjustment on the bonnet.

I have read thru somè of the e90 forum from the states and they have a few issues as well.

if the owners are majority from ckds, probability of the ckd defects are higher

sorry dave ì missed ur message..what sort of problem were u facing in the hood? wouldn't the sound would have persisted regardless of the speed if something in the hood is touching each other. anyways, I ll take another look. so far there is no indication of anything touching each other.then again I cud be wrong...

went to AB Glen and drove it with the tech sitting next to me. He heard the sound and claimed it was due to the RFT tires ?? We went to Pirellis w/shop and reduced the front tire pressure....
Another run and the sound was there....the AB guy advised to let the car run for a few more thousands km before come back for another t/shoot or when the sound is too annoying to be ignored....

Ya, that is lousy response. You should complain to the Svc Mgr to get this problem resolved. If it doesn't work, write a complain to BMW Malaysia. Looks like AB will never improve themselves

Complain to the service manager not only to get the problem resolved but to get that tech a kick in the pants. Wait until the sound is too annoying to be ignored? This is a new E90! What sort of attitude is that towards his own product, not to mention customer satisfaction? He's spoiling the name of AB and BMW and I'm sure management would appreciate knowing about it.

hi guys
I m making appointment with the supervisor this coming friday the 10th to check on the sound. Dedicate the whole day to get it resolved, hopefully. In general , I am able to detect the source of most weird noises from my previous cars but this one seems a bit strange..its there but it seems so far away...

the worst part it only makes me drive fast so i cant hear it coming....i am still waiting for davids advice on the work done on his front bonnet, sigh
