Hey.. I'm new here. Just intro myself at newbies section. I'm about to have a pre-owned 2010 e90 320d. I've paid the booking. Later when i met my mechanic n talk about my upcoming car, he's a bit shocked because i dared to buy a diesel bmw. He said if the engine give problems, to change it, a new diesel engine will cost about rm20k to rm30k.. Is it right? Or is it almost imposible a bimmer to have problem until you need to change the engine?

Engine give problems? Can he give examples of problems/issues? Who is your mech? Does he has experience with BMW diesels? Does he own one?

We have a group of 320d owners with some clocked milleage over 200k km without any major issues apart from wear and tear maintenance. Speak to any of them personally.

He is an independent bmw mech, but he doesn't own specificly 320d. After all he said, thats the only one e90 diesel he ever changed the engine.
Can i say 1 doesn't mean all? He made me sh*t my pants for that rm30k.

Clocked at 200k without any major issues.Woaa.. It will take ages for me to get there. Because i work only 2km from home.
So i guess theres nothing to afraid of right?

Btw thanks for your reply wingzee

I have personally clocked in 130k myself to date and no issues. I have seen a 528i f10 got an engine overhaul, a 335i too...engine failures can happen to anybody depending on owner's maintenance habits or just plain bad luck with defective components. The only major issue with the e90 is the timing chain issue which could lead to engine damage, but i am not sure if anyone in malaysia experienced that before.

Join in any of the TT sessions and the guys wld gladly share bro....

An engine for 30k? That is cheap man.

I would expect a new BMW engine, N52, N20, Petrol, diesel to be at least in the 50-60k range.

Very-very seldom you need to change the entire engine ( water locked being one of the few I can think off ). Generally you fix things that break. High mileage? Piston ring, valve seals, bearings, etc. Engine over heat? Water pump, thermostat, etc

Engines are still not like smart phones yet. You break a Samsung, most of the time if the phone is >3 years old, you buy a new Samsung.

I would avoid this mechanic like a plague.

Kevin, the mech said rm30k from potong parts. He said if i use 320i, he can get the engine at potong for rm5k only.

Ahshawn plain bad luck is the word.
im using Kia forte now, before owning it, people said don't buy kia, the engine will give u problems, the spare parts are expensive, take so long to order etc.. But now I've been using it since 2010. Non of them occurred.

Once again for BMW i feel like gambling to buy it. Whether it happen or not, nobody knows until i own it :p
Just need to take care and maintain it on time.
I think i should go to the TT session. Thanks for your replies. Much appreciated!

By any chance ur mech ex staff of Auto Bavaria ? LOL ... Culture .... nothing cant be fixed but first time hearing BMW engine will give away that fast ... So many experts here to assist you ... don't blame the car ... blame the human that touch it .... not entirely the human ... I having few n some clocks up more than 300k KM ... With the TLC everything should be able to prevent ..

We could be twins. lol. I also owned a kia forte previously, bought it in 2010 and sold it for a E90 320D.

Hey guys, new updates. I'm moving to 325i 2011, found a better deal. Next thursday will pickup the car. Every second feel like an hour. Fuhh..
We are no longer twins aramis :p Btw I didn't sell my forte, my sister bought it from me. Feel relief I don't need to sell my best bud at used car. Can say hi when ever we have family gathering ;)

To all who give me a courage to buy a bmw, much appreciated. Non of my family having one. It's like a breaking the family tradition to not touching BMW ever.

coolermasterforeverhttp://www.bmwclubmalaysia.com/newforums/index.php?/user/48736-coolermasterforever/, because of you open such thread, I register as member. I do not own any bmw yet but recently i have been reading lotsa E90 320D. The only major issue reported in UK was the timing chain failure. Problem solve for those manufactured from March 2011. Anyone heard such news in Malaysia?
Diesel is always a challenge due to stupid high sulfur for previous and existing Euro2M consumer and it could lead issue to the fuel injector. Anyone install additional diesel filter like those 4X4 pickup?

Thanks kthon, good info from u. Are u going to own a 320d? New member in da clubb..
Btw, thank god now we have euro5 in msia.
I'm worry-free about diesel now. Got my 325i for two days already. Have been so long driving 1.0 and 1.6 cars, this bmw is something else.

Nik, waiting is hurtful right? I past that phase. Now i have another problem. Every hour feel like a second. Never had enough driving.

hi bro cooler, may i to know what the reason u switch to e90 325i? what the price/mileage/year your UDM? did u bought from dealer or private??

Hi there, i am super newbie to BMW and the one that i am looking at now is 2013, 320d, with M-sport kit and i drive. Maintenance cost off course will be one of the most important topics to look at for a new BMW owner like me. the car mileage is clocked at < 35k, wanted to go for a test drive later to feel the diesel torque! Please enlighten me here! Thank you.

A new diesel engine from BMW will cost RM43k. A half cut will cost from RM17k onwards. Sometimes you might find a bargain for RM12k as well depending on your luck.

Anyone can advise where can we get reliable & good workshop for service bmw?
I come across Techtric Auto, M-Power Technique, PitStop (Bangi), Eastcos Auto (B/Jalil)..
Which I to go? tq.

Don't go to Techtric auto. They know nothing about our diesel engine. Went there before and gave me some engine oil which doesn't suit my car. They are focused on higher end conti cars.
