The engine of my bimmer (530d) developed problems while cruising along the highway. Later it was diagnosed to have a 'butterly-flap' missing at the 'in-take manifold'. Upon further inspection, the piston on cylinder no 5 had a very heavy deposit and the cylinder wall no 6 was scratched noticebly.Since BMW MAalaysia do not want to subsidise on the repairs, I need to know where I can get parts for my engine at a reasonable cost. Can anyone explain to me why the piston have such deposits and why the 'butterfly-flap- of the in-take manifold can dislodged itself and had caused damaged to the cylinder wall? Is this not a manufacturer defects??My bimmer is a 2004 model registered in 2005 and had don abt 200K in KM.

this seems to be common with the 530d...i have seen a few similar car that get this problem/damage before...AB normally change the engine block and pistons...

thanks for the reply t2ribena but AB charges are too much to bear. Cant we claim on manufacturer defect ...it seems that this is an issue AB should look into. When buying a high performance car, we should at least get a better deal out of it. Cant help but feel we are short-changed on this. we need to highlight to AB of this defect!....how do we go about it?
Worst case senario, where can I get a reasonably priced parts to replace my damaged unit?

abt 210K. Its a CBU 2004 model registered in March 2005.

try go to M1 Motorwork in Kg. Kayu Sg. Ara... I had seen them fixing this problem before. Definitely cheaper compared to what you have to pay in AB... try calling this number 019-3123032 (Jeffrey)
Good luck :top:

I have a customer who has the same problem. As long as you have a full service record from them then you can claim from them. This problem is a manufacturing defect n they have two engine recall to be done to this diesel car. My customer actually get a full engine change but he has to pay for labour. If you dun service your car with the authorized dealer, claiming from them is a bit difficult.

Bought a 530d earlier this year, same vintage.

Fiendish drive:driver: Rrrrr!!

Only discovered this swirl flap issue recently. I think someone else has posted on this before (without resolution). A lot of people have posted on this issue on beemer forums abroad. Still don't see any recall or other solutions from BMW. It's like a sword of damocles hanging over your head : will today be the day ?

Definitely a design defect : small piece, but catastrophic consequences. I would really like to know BMW's official response to this issue.

One solution is to remove them, apparently without loss in performance, and to install metal plugs to cover the holes (there's a pdf file out there somewhere on this).

Any other 530d / 525d owners out there want to share info ?

BTW I have OTHER recurring issues with my UDM ... talk about a love / hate relationship !

thxs for the onput marcochen....from day one the car has had the service done in AB but their reasoning is that t=it has passed the warranty period and had clocked 200+K in km simply means I have to foot the cost myself.

My only hope is that BMW will recall and replace this defective unit. I have posted some details to their R&D dept at AB World highlighting this issue.

i suggest u gip bmw malaysia a call...ask them with full service done at AB all this while how on earth can the engine suffer such catastrophic damage...

AB shud have known this is an issue and rectify it earlier...

True, sometimes we need to be a bit tough in order to get things done in Msia. It seems like they are taking this for granted...sigh........

Bro,By any chance could your car be the one in AB Kuantan?Coz I saw the same case in there

yes, guna. the one in kuantan is my car.....

My heart goes out to you (and your pocket) man.I was there looking at it and thinking this is a serious problem and it surely looks like a manufacturer's fault and AB is not going to bear the costs? Now why am I not surprised?

Since we're on the subject,I was really disappointed with the lackadaisical attitude of their service department. That was the first time I've been there to get my car serviced and checked or at least I was trying to.Now.I've known almost everybody in AB Kuantan for a while but this is the 1st time I actually went in there as a customer and what a circus. The first 3 days I went there, they were claiming that their computer was offline and that they can't do a thorough check on my car, made me wait for hours. On the 4th day towards the late noon they finally hooked up my car and found nothing wrong(that's good). But they couldn't hoist the car up to check the undercarriage and stuffs coz there were too many cars backlogged.

And then the worst thing happened, one of the mechanics reversed my car without getting the guards to raise the plastic beam gate and he conveniently ran the gate up my roof leaving a long deep scratch up my roof(bearing in mind the car was just sand polished at RM400).And when confronted, they offered to get that touched up at their panel workshop which I know for a fact that doesn't do a good job when it comes to touch ups as such.So I told them I'd get that done at the workshop of my choice and hand them the bill. They weren't happy about it and so I refused to pay my bill which was RM360 being the cost to register my car with AB.At this moment in time we're still at a stalemate

The point I'm trying to make is that AB here in Kuantan has a great showroom but they've got a long way to go with their service department. It's unlike being in the KLang Valley coz you have a choice there but we here in Kuantan are just plain screwed coz the only people we can go to whether we like it or not is AB.I surely hope someone up there in AB is reading this.In the meantime please keep me posted with your case and do PM me for my hp number if you feel like a teh tarik

Dear Guna.

Thank you for sharing your nasty experience. I know how you feel as I have been there many a times. May I have your permission to post and requote your 'experiences' to BMW Malaysia and AB? As for me, I have lost all compromise with AB. To-date, they have not contacted me and I feel as a consumer, AB have violated my rights.
I have written to them giving them a last chance to get back to me or I will take this matter to our Ministry/Tribunal for solution. Period.

nb. my hp is 0193141348. Feel free to call....anytime.

Dear dzuljazz2001,
I will go one step further and am willing to be even present personally if the need be.As it is we are paying a King's ransom for their services and parts but when it's teir turn to keep their end of the bargain, they either choose to keep quiet or pretend to be preoccupied.Based on what you've told this for forum,I'd hit the roof if I'm in your shoes.Anytime bro

fren...retaliation/harsh action is not how you should handle this case initially as they have their rights to refuse as ur car is way past warranty and travelled more than 200k km already...what you can do is to try to reason with them why the thing can fail even with full service and if the thing is known to be problematic and can cause catastropic damage, why it was not communicated to you to change it under ur expense...in this case you can try to get their understanding and apply for goodwill repair on ur car...with costs sharing...

dun get so worked up with opinion here that it is all AB or BMW faults due to some isolated incident they faced themself...no one is perfect in this world...

since u feels that AB takes no action, why not contact BMW Malaysia for some assistance...
