this is rather annoying, my car is shakin hard during idling, rpm goes below 500... luckily i just got back from work, changed n go out again for badminton, it starts to shake..! :beaten: ..can anyone tell me wats wrong with the car? misfiring problem? is it a known factor tat e46 gives out so much prob or jsut me? i had my steptronic sensor changed 4 months ago when it jammed during my trip to genting*&^#!!$%.... damn 'sui'... for a bimmer, tats pretty unreliable man!!now this prob arises, SIGH.. #%$@&when i check my dipstick, the engine oil is at the minimum point..! i tot they claim to change every 25k km.? shld i top it up myself as i still have 10k more to go? $%#^&$)( my bimmer fails me AGAIN.....

Last week I had some vibration at low rpm below 2000 including idling.

Turned out that one of the six ignition coil was "kaput" - thus the car was running 1 cylinder short.

Replacing it is a 15 minute job at a regular mechanic, pending spare part availability

thks schone, prob solved.. u were right, its the ignition coil. according to the mechanic, he said its factory defect... dunwan to believe also have to believe... he says masuk air i also have to percaya la..!!! thks god its done.!

yours is 6 pot, no wonder still can hit 2000 rpm, mine only a 4cyc, only 3 is working, so its jerkin terribly..

its pretty easy to replace nia, i think can DIY too.! but still *&%$& ......

cheers,
jsen

forgot to add one more thing, i asked the mechanic is this a common probs (steptronic sensor n ignition coil)? he said yes especially for those still under warranty period.... im speechless( in cantonese--> jar L dou)..

hmm strange, i thought 2004 year 318i BMWs already have the ignition coil problems sorted out. Mine's year 2002 and in April 2005, had a major problem like yours. Many year 2002 318i cars have this ignition coil problem.

It's feedback like this that makes me wonder about e46.

Any comments, other e46 owners out there?

Dear bros...I got this problem with my ride E46 2001 318i...if i got trap in a traffic jam...i realized that the rpm will go down after a few acce and braking.... sometimes even like going to mati engine... anyone can enlighten me what could be the possibility?

my 1 is E46 318i 2.0 2003 N42 , also got the same problems la ...

it's only happen sometime only, when i stop at the traffic light, the car wil idle like hell ... something like 'high cam' ... the idling was so unstable until the passenger side also can feel and see the seat is shaking . This happen since i got my car (new) at AB.

I had sent back b4 to AB glemarie but they just told me .. this car is like that 1 ... just so crazzy answer from them !!! my fren also got a same car with me ... he brought it 6 months after me .. but still got the same problems.

so i think this can b say is a 'common' problem for N42 engine ....
but not sure with others engine of E46 ...

Looks like the most of the 4 pot are giving more problem, than the 6 pot. Even my mech say the six is more relaible, may be some of the owner can confirm ?
If this is the case better to consider to get a 6 pot then for those who thinking if changing car ...

Someone please do something about this problem...I have the same problem about 1 year ago...and the salesman said it is a manufacturing defect. The mechanic has already replace the coils for cylinder 1 that caused the problems...luckily it was under warranty..but yesterday I had the same problem and they said ...now the coils for cylinder 4 that caused the problems...they recommended that I have to change the coil for all 4 cylinder...which going to cost me about RM 1500.00 because no more under warranty...This things shouldn't happened in the first place because it is a manufacturing defect.....they should recall and replace it for free....For other owner of E46......your time will come...it is like a time bomb...sooner or later....I have already argued with the mechanics...but I think we need this club to help us.....this is the kind of assistance that the club can help us .... E46 owner...dear Mr President pls help us....

ours engine is the latest for 318i N42, no wonder so much prob... seems like the newest is always the scapegoat! i've asked the mechanic, how much it costs to change a new one? he said ard 200++ n AB is charging RM1500 for a total of 4... the pricing is remarkable high as it only needs 15 mins to change one.

if they were to charge 250 per piece, this make out rm500 for the labour cost.. THIS IS SLAUGHTER ALREDY!!!..

during my nex service, i think i shld asked them to change all 4.. fendi1600 was right, mech told me the same thing too. if this was the case, they shld incur the cost, NOT US!!!..

thks for the feedback guys.. n stephen, nice to see u again...i'll give AB a kow kow firing during my nex visit..

another victim,
jsen

damn i didnt know every1 has this prob. i thought i was the only 1. i drive an e46 coupe yr 2000. had this prob fairly often.

Well guys...I'm not a technical person..I don't really know about engine...but I really love Bimmer...I thought I'm driving the ultimate driving machine...by now we know that our E46 definitely got an engine problem..Personally I thought using my own rule of thumb...for a brand new car...should last at least 5 years without any major pbm....I just collected my car with a bill totalling RM1100.00...FYI, I just change only 1 ignition coils for cylinder # 4...the mechanic still insist that I have to change all 4 ignition coils...When I asked why all 4?..R u expecting more engine miss fire? Is it factory defect ? Why don't u replace all 4 when I had my first engine missfire during warranty? "..when the engine is hot the oils got clustered thus causing the ignition coil short circuit..pls send service regularly.."...Is it true...I don't know....I'm no mechanic..

... He said it is not factory defect but now they have the new improve and reliable BOSCH ignition coil......full of crap..well I think that we are now using ignition coil "cap ayam brand" from German ...they still don't want to admit it...furthermore the mech. told me that we should send our car for service every 15,000 KM...instead of 25,000...another crap...I've just sent my car for service 1 month ago and still got pbms...

...the BOSCH ignition coil part will cost about RM176.00 per cylinder...(labour cekik darah) ..but sometime they will try to convince you that got air leak here and there which cause the vibration....mine "here and there" parts replacement cause about RM 760.00 but it is actually the ignition coils...because only after replacing the ignition coils my engine stop vibrating completely..For a lay man like me...I know that something is not right..
...My final word of advice ...for those still under warranty...insist to replace all 4/6 new improved ignition coils instead of the current cap Ayam brand ....

Dear guys,

Ignition coil failure is definitely very common N42 2.0 Valvetronic problem. However, I believe cars from late 2003 onwards with the N46 2.0 Valvetronic should not have the problem as BMW has stopped ordering from the old ignition coil vendor. Please have your ignition coil checked as to the brand of it. If it reads BOSCH, it should be fine. Otherwise, you will experience coil failure sometime in your car's life. Moreover, make sure the coil is all the way down fitted properly. Sometimes, fitment could be a problem.

I got mine changed all four. You can actually do it yourself. I did it on my own....however, RM1100 for changing one coil is crazy! The price of the coil is RM180 (if i remember correctly) for a piece from AB.

However, slight vibrations still persist even after you changed your coil. These could be attributed to other problems such as engine mounting, thickening of the engine oil (u can check this by touching the oils with your finger to see if its gooey), O2 sensor kaput, fuel regulator, etc etc.

Just bought a used bimmer from AB 2 months ago, and thank God, was advised by one of the forummer here to replace the ignition coils from the defect (Brand= Bremi) to the good (Brand= Bosch)

Even the salesman did not know what I was talking about, but he checked with the SC and agreed to change.

Dear J, thanks man!
