E46 Maintenace

I just brought a 2nd hand E46 about 2 months ago. Mileage : 103000 KM (318 year 01/02)Recently, I heard some noice from the back wheel sound like baring problem but the mechanic told me the issue is "Axle Differential Baring" and i will cost around 6k to replace a new one and recon cost 2.5k My questions: 1. Have any exprience this problem before?2. How much is cost?3. Is there an alternative solution?4. What cause the problem? (Ware and tear?)5. Any alternative mechanic (reliable and hobours for second opinion)?- take is offline - lukeccw@yahoo.com Please help!

Hey Bro,

Welcome to the club.

I had a similar light vibration(separate thread) recently and changed my axle and gbox oil. At 100K kmh the gbox oil must be changed. Mine was black as coal when it was drained.

Other things I have changed on axle issue include:-

Axle major mounting
Rear sub mountings
Absorbers - may be related

huiyoooooooooo.......at that mileage,even the bearings on my car osso will cry their balls off......... :rofl:

take your car to anudder mechanic.....optimum otto in damansara kayu ara or m spid in usj........my car has done > 400k kms already and it's still on ori diff with no problems.

Hey Dude,

The rear axle mounting is about RM200+. The gbox and axle oil is around RM500+. I dont believe you have to change the axle at this mileage. Change all the bearings and bushes and you will see a marked difference.

I send mine to Bimmer Auto, Jalan Railway. Selvam is the dude.
