It's already happened about a week; i can hear the knocking sound ("dup" sound one time) from my rear car. This only happened when i brake and slow the accelaration i.e. whenever i want go thru road bump or wanna stop at trafic light. Send to mechanic and he replaced one pc of rear axle bush, he said the others two was still good. Test drive the sound still exist :( ...it's my rear axle going to kaput?Any ideas guy..it's due to the rear axle oil, need a replacement? or which others part that i need to check? For info. my gear shifting during accelaration was smooth.Best Regard. TQ

bro, i had the same problem b4... sent it to the mechanic 4 times. most possible cause of the sound would be
1) gearbox too much freeplay (most possible the cause)
2) drive shaft
3) axle
or the combination of all

i had all mine change b4 the sound was finally gone

cheers

wow! that sound serious man. Bro Karate70, u change your gear box, axle and drive shaft...how much that cost? must be damn expensive. Where did you send your car?

cheers.

luckyly it was still under warranty by the dealer... so they did it all up for me till i was satisfied tht the sound was eradicated... they sent it to a place in pandan perdana..

but fr wat i observe too much freeplay is the cause of the sound. may i know your mileage of ur car... drive shaft prob onli comes in after 100k.

Bro, my car mileage was 61k miles. already send back my car to dealer as its still in warranty period. See how, lets them check. cheers

Do you know how they solved the gearbox "too much free-play" problem? I am having the same problem, and I believe a number of other forummers are also having this issue.

to be frank to u all la

i dun think the dealer are so "kind" to solve all these

they just buy time

GOOD LUCK

"dup"

i dunno they going to buy time bro..i just send there and ask to settle the problem. How they going to settle is up to them...as i mention to them, i am going to collect the car this afternoon and please no more f*rking "dup" sound. cheers.

Mont bro, i had to be patient with my dealer as well. sent it 4 times b4 the irritatin sound was gone. i think they tried to safe on cost n did not wan to admit to the gearbox problem until the 4th time.... kakakaka

stud bro, i think they refurbished or changed to a recond one. dont really matter to me as long as the sound is gone n workin well. glad it was under warranty though.

Ya, fully understood how outside ppls do their biz., but when i mention BMW club and the club sticker was there they will react differrently hahaha scare i am going to publish their dealer name. :D
After checking, the problem most probably from the rear axle. In engineering term that due to "Gear tooth Backlash". They will decide to change new rear axle for me or overhaul the rear axle if they can. Will update when all the problem settle. cheers.

Having same problem with my car. I sent it back to the dealer last thursday as i have mre week of warraty left (pew). The dealer called me on saturday and told me my car can only be ready by next wednesday, so no udm for a week.

I'll guve a update here when i get my car back.

for your info,

my e46 325 has only clocked 40,000kms. it already has the dup sond occasionally.

it's a very normal problem with rear drive cars. my previous 2000 e46 has the 'dup'ping practically everytime i slow down. of course the mileage was at above 150k kms. and also many many many hard accelerations.

we've just got to be gentle with cars with rear axles. as for the dealers changing the rear axle, i would be extremely sceptical they would do it. the cost would be around a few k just to change into a recond one. that would eat into their profit too much.

ive donemany things to my previous axle. it just didnt help. even changing to a recond one does not guarantee anything.

it's just one of the gravest things about our car which ive learned to live with.

ps having said that, i'll await good news from you guys

okay..took my car yesterday. i am so happy, no more fa*king "dup" sound. The car was excellent, gear shifting was silky smooth and more responsive. Ask the dealer what the parts was change, he gave me the workshop contact number and asked me to find out with mechanic who work on my car.
Gave a call, the mechanic explain detail on the problem. According to him there is no single parts was change, gearbox was healthy, rear axle okay, drive shaft okay and all the bushes was in good condition. There is freeplay on my lower gear downshift e.g 2 to 1 or 3 to 2. So he just reprogrammed/reset my gear software and all the dup dup sound was gone. This freeplay was due to the gear oil flushing, i did ATF flush on my gearbox recently. So according to that mechanic this problem not happend to all, i am unlucky fella so i kenalah hahahaha that what he said :D . The problem can be encounter just by reprograme the gear software....thats all for today. Cheers.
