E46 fuel cover

bros, there is a problem with my pals e46. all of a sudden when he wanted to pour fuel the tank (door/cover?) refuse to open. Usually he'll just depress the fuel door and it will open but now it refuses to budge. Any idea what the problem is?thanks for all the help bros.
