Dear sifus,While cruising on plus highway from seremban to kl this morning, out of the sudden the car made a strange sound and felt very heavy. i stopped at nilai rnr and there were smokes came out from engine compartment.I had it towed back to seremban, to my usual workshop in senawang.I was told that the gearbox needs overhaul. It has something to do with the coverter's bearing and oil pump failure. As i am new here (introduced myself in newbies section) and i don't have knowledge about this issue, i hope you give me your opinions. This will help me in making my decision.Lastly, to all muslim friends Selamat Berpuasa and Best Regards to all.Thanks.

It is best u call d mechanic direct. I send my 5 bmws to him n he knows bmws. not a big workshop which i prefer becoz then he can attend 2 d cars himself. Location aman puri in kepong . Tel stanley 012 3539066.

shasall,

You have the failure of the aux hydraulic pump bearing. This will cause the ATF to gush out and
splash to exhaust. The other possible damage is the torque converter sleeve which could be worn
out and cause some minor leak.

Check out the GB rubber mounting. When the mounting fail, it will cause the shaft between the engine
side and the GB side to be slight misalign. This will cause the premature wear and tear of the aux pump
bearing.

The aux pump (new) will most probably cost you about RM1300 and the torq converter (second hand)
will cost you about RM850. add in some ATF and labour charge the total cost about Rm2800.

btw, check the ATF when you drain it for metal filling.

The above happen to me before. and I was lucky that the GB part is not damaged.

Bro Jarance,

Exactly what i've been told. I will ask the mechanic to check on the things you've mentioned. Hopefully the GB part is safe.
Appreciate your help and a million thanks for sharing.

Dear rx8,

Towed my car from seremban to stanley's workshop today. I was shock to find out such a young guy repairs bmw. Infact during our discussion, we came up with another option to convert the transmission into manual. Is that good? or it has disadvantages other than traffic jam.
Hope you and all the sifus could share.

Thanks.

Dear shasall, i just rang stanley n he said u have decided 2 do d manual conversion. !st time i have heard of an e46 manual conversion. Make sure though that stanley gives u some kind of warranty. He is very accomodating so anything u r not clear abt, pls clarify with him. He is young but i feel comfortable with his work. Also he is honest n wont take u 4 a ride. Good luck in yr conversion.

Dear rx8,

Thank you for your concern. You're absolutely right and knows his stuff well. Hopefully everything will be fine. Thanks again for your help.
Maybe we can meet up someday, probably at the workshop. I will frequently be there for this coming 1-2 weeks to check on the progress.
I'll buy you dinner (fasting month cannot have lunch or tea la).

Cheers!

my 325i jelking when downshift. do u guys think that it is because of the clutch plate? if it does, how much the cost to repair it.

Thk u 4 yr kind offer shasall, but evenings r not convenient as i live in pj. hopefully v'll catch up one day. I sent my son's e36 325 to stanley this morning to fix his air cond n saw yr e46. Looks well kept. Stanley says d conversion shd b straight forward. Mayb some sifus who has done a similiar conversionon an e46 can advise. I know loafer has done a manual conversion on his e36 328 n very happy with it.

Thanks for the compliment rx8. That is my week end ride. I regret when my usual mechanic failed to diagnose the problem even though
i've complained about oil leaked for several times. I've stressed out that it was the gearbox oil but he denied it. Even when i asked him why the oil indicator came out every time i start the car, he said, it was because of the sensor began to worn out. Worst still, i brought the car there a day before the incident happened when i heard a slight strange sound underneath which i believe came from the gearbox. He tested the car and concluded that the sound came from some loosen nuts at the exhaust pipe.
He should have sorted out the problem and could have saved the gearbox.
Btw, bro Loafer. Hope you don't mind to share your experience after the conversion.

When will yr car b ready? Remember 2 ask stanley 4 a verbal warranty b it 1, 3, 6 months or longer. Loafer normally surfs d e36 sites, but he is always very helpful n informative, so hopefully he acn reply u.

Not sure when it will be ready. Should be in a week or more. I was there this afternoon. The gear box is up but still a lot to do. Sure, i will ask for his warranty.

Hi rx8
I've done with the conversion and satisfied with the result. I am now at the workshop waiting for wheels balancing to be done and at the same time admiring at a beautiful white e30.
Thank you for recommending me to Stanley. I owe you one.
Hope we can meet up for teh tarik soon.

Bro shasall,
Don't mean to be daft but what does Manual conversion mean? Does it mean that the car is now a manual car and no longe auto and use clutch to change gears?
How much is the cost?
Thanks very much bro.

Bro,
If i am not mistaken yes the car transplant to Manual Drive Gear Box to get the pickup oomps..

bro ndsolo,

Yes the car is in normal manual transmission now and i was suffering in heavy traffic lately ha ha. The cost? Mine is about 12k.

Shasall, i was at stanley's place n he said u had taken delivery of d car. Did he give u some form of warranty? Mayb u can share yr experience with d new transmission. I thought it was going 2 b cheaper than what u mentioned. Loafer does not normally surf d 46 threads. Presumably now that d car is a manual, it would b more powerful than previous. Did u notice d 318 with d fake quad exhaust that was hoisted at stanleys. I thought it was very funny. D original exhaust had its tip cut off 2 hide itself, n d quad pipes was showing under d bumper.

Hi rx8,
He did asked me to get back to him should any faulty occurs but did not mentioned any warranty time frame. As of now, i am pleased with his job. Supposedly the cost should be cheaper but i've changed the clutch plate to a new one and so for to some of other small items.
With the new transmission, the car is more powerful now and i enjoyed every minute of driving it.
You mean the 318 with m3 sticker? I did noticed it however, my attention was more towards your beautiful white e30. Mind me for asking, why is she in the workshop?
