E46(2.0) can't reverse

hi bimmer sifus, my car now cannot reverse, only can move forward. the indicator at the meter indicate "R" but the gear is not engage.. anyone experience this before?what are the causes?

bro phugoid... you are not alone. Mine kena already! Nearly changed my gearbox. But I went to change the ATF and the filters... problem still there but become lesser and lesser and finally gone! Now tip top!

mine only reverse cannot move but moving fwd as normal..
is it bcoz of the ATF or filter?
or maybe of any linkage or something?

perhaps an "O" ring needs changing. not that hard, should not cost you a bomb to fix (few hundred). If problem persists, than take it all down and overhaul.

Likely to be solenoids problem in the valvebody of the gearbox. Google for ZF5HP19 technical info, you will know what I mean.

Reverse Solenoid

Bro ... mine had the same problem.... common problem for e46.... Just change the Reverse Solenoid.... It cost rm 280 .... It is situated in the gearbox.... Have to change the gearbox oil , filer and gasket too... cost about rm 800 in total.... Go to Albert Pang , Pandan Indah... He is an expert.... 1/2 day job... mention my name and he give u priority .... Phone number is 0122017792.

at first it can't engage the reverse gear at all but when I shake the gear stick to left and right few times, it can engage but very rough engage. After change the ATF and filters, it become intermittent (like once a week... rather than everyday before). After sometime the problem just vanish...:rock:

After driving bout 15km, my reverse gear can engage back without repair anything...
maybe it bcoz of the solenoid not perfectly function..
should i change the ATF oil? i hv change it before last 2 years..

You should consider flushing the ATF. I plan to change every 30K with flush every 60K

i guess so.. it's time to change the ATF and filter.. hopefully the problem doesn't come again..
