managed to park by the side of the highway & realized that thermostat went red. can't start at all. Wait about 5 min+ (engine still shut off, ignition in ON mode), suddenly temperature back to normal & engine can start. seemed like heating/drying the water which may come in.. dunno. happened last nite (5/2/2012), from Klang to Subang Jaya, car stopped at highway junction before Bukit Raja. heavy rain !why ? any advice ? any similar experience ?

maybe some minor ecu glitch but best to hv it check out ... overheating problem will make the electronics do a shut down to protect the engine from major damage so when the unit prompted the overheating issue, it shuts down. shutting of the engine and leaving the ignition on forma few minutes is like doing a manual resetting to the computer. ....

Probably rain water hit something inside and dried off thanks to the engine heat. Yes better send to workshop to thorough checking.

i am noob in e39 but just for the sake of sharing, the incident happened to u is similar to my other car ie civic es. the civic engine will automatically shut down when its tdc sensor kaput. has to wait until the engine cools down then only can reignite the car. my mechanic recommends take a cloth and wet it and put it on the engine to quicken the cooling process.

Coolant circulation may be hampered by blockage in radiator or thermostat malfunction.
