Does anyone know the difference between these two radio displays? Apparently both are found in pre-facelift E39s... my CKD 520i comes with the one on top, and I took it out to have a look at who manufactured it and it says Philips.

I recently bought a CD53 single slot front dash CD player from the facelifted E39, but also purchased the plug converter ( http://www.europeanautosource.com/product_info.php?products_id=291 ).Once installed, everything works fine physically (it all connects together fine and the CD player is properly powered and the eject button works etc), but the CD player doesn't seem to communicate with the display. It doesn't seem to know that a CD player is connected, and defaults to functioning as a clock only. Are there any differences between the two displays units? Perhaps it only works with the one on the bottom?

ok guys, no replies but here is an update. i bought the MID-type wide display with some dead pixels off ebay for about 50 usd and tried installing it, it works plug n play! now i am enjoying my cd53 alpine single disc player in my bmw and retaining a nice oem look.

if yours is the facelift model you should not need the plug converter that i needed to buy. cd53 available on ebay with various prices... you can use those from the e53 bmw x5 too, its same fit. mine is also from an x5. i bought mine for 200+ usd i think from ebay.

im not sure which bottom display you are referring to, but the one with the larger LCD is called an MID and its plug and play with the cd53. if its the smaller LCD its the IRIS system and you will have to source an MID display, as the IRIS display does not have sufficient buttons for control and not the same communication interface to talk to the CD53 which works with MID.

Hi Paul, how did u remove the MID?

This is what i got from net:

When you pull out the volume knob and look in the opening, there is a tiny little torx screw at six o'clock position, use a torx screw driver to turn anti-clock wise for about 45 degree, you will hear the MID panel unclicked, use a small screw driver to push the whole front panel out.

(1) Remove the radio power/volume knob (you have already done that)
(2) A small hole will be revealed at 6 O'clock position. Use a bright light to locate a 2mm allen screw inside the hole.
(3) Engage a 2mm allen key and turn about 90 degrees. This will retract spring loaded tabs holding the MID.
(4) While still holding the allen key twisted, gently pull out the MID

May be i am noob but i can not find any torx srcew after i remove the volume knob.

I took some pic for my MID. Can u point out how i gonna to remove the MID?

Thanks.

the HIGH MID has the torq screw to remove the MID. THe low-MID don;t have that screw like that above pic. Must be another way to plug it out.

U are right.

Just realize the way to take out the MID is different for both.

This is for high MID.

My low MID don't have the torx screw.

This gave me some problems at first as well. The "low MID" isn't an MID, so you will not find anything related to it when you Google. It's called an IRIS display so you have to Google for that instead of MID.

You have to push that little slot that you can see to the right of the knob. Anything you can PM theredcortina on these forums also, he helped me remove it.

True....Happens when you get carried away with the term MID...:D..

IRIS = Integrated Radio Information System

Yes, indeed! It is IRIS instead 'low MID'!

Finally i took out the IRIS, simple as ABC.

Just use a flat screw driver to push the latch to right and use another hand to pull the IRIS out. Done!

Hi all,
Just want to ask for the HIGH MID (mine is this type for late-2001 E39 local specs), what is the connector pin type behind?

Is it teh 10-pin round connector or the 12-pin quadlock flathead connector?
