guys and gals with E36s ,just wanted to know just how long ( at what mileage ) did your GM auto gear box last before rebuild is required ? heard it ( GM gear box ) sucks big time . so i am now trying to decide either to wait for the tell tale sign of the transmission failing or just do it at a mileage at which most gear box calls it quit .

This generally depends on :
1. the maintenance of the gearbox
2. the driving style and therefore the load placed on the gearbox

Any telltale signs yet?

Hi Lee, with your OMG WTF style of driving, your gearbox may "let go" faster.... :p

Uncle driving style - approx 200,000 - 250,000km or maybe beyond.

Schumacher driving style - approx 150,000 - 200,000km.

Full rebuild at least rm5k and above.. If someone say can do it below that, forget it as it will not be FULLY REBUILT. Even if you were to get the FULL NEW parts at dealers price, it will cost at least 3k or more.

A FULLY rebuilt gearbox will last for many many years. A poorly rebuilt gearbox will last you for many many days.

I would wait till the gearbox give way before re-building unless you have enough moolah to go around with. Or if you have extra moolah about 1k or less maybe, you can always just open it up to check the condition yourself with your own eyes. There no need to open it up and its a MUST to rebuild it, if the technician tell you that, you can tell the tech to go fly kite. 1 full rebuilt labour is about 2k, so who doesn't want to make that kind of money? Go figure :)

*p/s GM gearbox don't suck big time.

mine gave after 210,000 on the clock...rebuilt it..seems ok for the last 10,000 kms!...but who knows...i also have little faith in GM boxes..have tried to get a manual box for swap..still looking out... sigh...may really have to ship one back from the US...:(

:p..

Kuskus....why ship back from US??? Manual GB Getrag 260 still available here la...you shud've ask Fabian when you were here for rock climbing..He knows where to show you.. B)

aiyoo...next time call me la... B)

it also depends on age, not only mileage.

If the gearbox is already 10 years old and mileage is low, it doesn't mean you don't have to overhaul your gearbox. The internal plastics get brittle and break, causing less pressure buildup in the valvebody, thus making the gearbox jerky and leaking. That is a sign to overhaul.

In my case, I overhauled at 120k km. I am no Schuey and follow diligently the top up, flush and even the D-N-P, one by one gearshift step to avoid torque convertor shock.

One forummer said my gearbox is even better than his when he bought new years ago.

mine '95 E36 318i oledi reaching 197K mileage ... as far as I am aware the tranny is still "virgin" and not sure when it will "kong"
Looks like I need to start allocate some fund for gearbox overhaul work...
p/s : so far I change the gear oil on around 30K mileage interval, is that a good practice to showdown the gearbox aging process ??

The slushbox problems with CKD models in Malaysia was posted in the bmwclub(old forum) by our Mr.Bulubesar a.k.a Chankl....very informative.

to made BMW affordable in Malaysia...they use GM giabok...cheh..!! Now I understand why they sell UDM with GM giabok here. and now most of the E36s UDM driver are suffering from the circumstances...*sigh*
