E36 325 Coupe: Pungent Smell From Exhaust

Hi Everyone,Just need some advise and knowledge sharing from all of you. My e36 325 coupe is giving me some pungent smell from the exhaust. for your information, i just changed the old exhaust to a new one (original bmw) due to wear and tear. this pungent smell has been there even before i changed my exhaust. is it because of a catalytic converter? if it is indeed an issue with the catalytic converter, what is your recommendation to fix it? Place? Thanks.

kl_mafia, when you said "changed exhaust", did you change the whole thing from the rear till the headers? Or just the muffler at the rear end? If you changed the whole thing, maybe they put in a pair of new cats for you, so, technically there should not be any funny pussy smell. But if you changed only the muffler, you will still be on your old cats... how old is the car by the way, I read somewhere cats are useful/effective for up to 5-7 years or so only. Time to get rid of them, and replace them with nice bullets... If auto, do it carefully to get it right to obtain performance improvements.

How do you define carefully and which workshop will have such knowledge?

"carefully" means no unwanted side effects like late gearchange, unable/slow to kick down, etc... Best way is to gain the knowledge yourself by checking with others (on similar drivetrain and car) who have done it successfully. Then you will know what to go for...

Will skin my pair of cats later this year, they are 12+ years old btw... old and wise? hehe

I have the same model car as you except that mine is a 5 speed auto. If the previous owner never changed the cats then mine would be as old as yours.

Now..... who has the same set up as I do???

How much to replace... bullets typically cost RM100-300 or sometimes more... any competent exhaust shops that deal with BMW regularly will do, remember to add labour and welding charge.

Hiop bullet will do. If i remember correctly Part cost abt Rm4xx / pc.

I heard the after market hi-flow cat converter is a cheaper and better (a bit more power??) alternative. What are your thoughts?? Where can I get them and how much??
